Guys, I'm copying from a post on another site but so what....


What do you guys do to rustproof your cars/trucks whatever? After every other wash I use WD40 in all the seams and drain holes but I really do nothing special for winter. Edit - yeah I do, I give them a good coat of wax.

I know you Canadian guys have places like Krown. Do you use them, is it a popular service? Do dealerships encourage it? I wonder how a business like that would do here in the Chicago area?

I just moved to the south, worked very well...:biggrin:

Have done the garden sprayer with SAE 30 oil or diesel fuel on the undercarriage, couple times per winter...makes a mess but completely prevents rust...obviously you want to steer clear of the exhaust, and the diesel fuel option isnt so good nowadays, since it is $4 a gallon...but IMO, those two options are the best, when starting with a rust free car.

There is always POR-15 paint, or rubberized undercoating, but other than that, best thing IMO other than what is listed above, it gets garaged, gets washed everytime the salt is out, it will delay the rust, but not indefinitely....rust up north is not a matter of if, its a matter of when, if you drive it in the winter, all you can really do is delay it....it will happen eventually, no matter what.

Im going with POR 15 on my Buick. Its expensive, but the stuff dries to an impenetrable super tough coating.

The POR and undercoating cant get everywhere, that's while I like the oiling. How effective is the oiling over a long period of time? Anyone know of any examples?

Yep, guy I worked with did oiling every so often on his 73 Caprice. 25 years later not a bit of rust here in the salt belt. Of course that resulted in the car looking terrible in the underneefy parts and the engine bay. Oil collected dirt terribly and in the spring we have cottonwood flying. I think he had all of it in the engine bay. Looked like he sheared a sheep in the engine bay and underneath. Of course you can clean that occasionally but it just comes back.

my 00' R/T is almost 13 years old now...never done much besides a good coat of wax.....the only rust spot on her is by the drivers quarter panel...and thats rusting from the inside out...doubtful from winter and most likely bad engineering with the trunk draining system.....fixing over the winter....

Hmmmm, I moved to the south and park my car the couple of days a year that it might snow or they put salt out for ice.

But seriously a good coat of wax and WD40 in all the drain holes is what I use to do way back when I lived in the great white north.
