i recently purchased and installed a pair of aftermarket Xenon driving/fog lights for my 96 chrysler concorde.
i got everything installed okay and the lights work fine (very bright!), but.....
they did not come with instructions so i did not know what to wire things too. they was two power wires and two ground wires (one power and ground for the lights themselves and a power and ground for the on/off switch which has 2 LED's). i wired both power wires to the battery and i properly grounded both ground wires.
but the problem with that installation for me is that the LED on the on/off switch is always on, so the lights can be turned on (or left on accidently:( ) because it has constant power.

i want the on/off switch to only have power when the key in the ignition is turned on or back, but i dont know what to wire it too.....:confused:

can anyone help me?

well you'd need to find which wire goes from the batt to the switch, this provides the signal to the relay to turn the fogs on. Then you'd need to find a power signal in the fuse box that is only on when the car is, the cig. lighter is a good one(though it comes on in the acc. possition....use a test light to check for others), and then get a piggy back fuse unit(dunno the exact name) that lets you have two fuses out of one socket, this will provide you with the 12+volt supply to the switch to control the fogs only when the car is on.

yeah, that helps...
but can i just splice right into the cig lighter power wire, or do i have to tap into it in the fuse box and add another fuse? (i dont use the cig lighter for anything right now, so its not like it will have anything else pulling power from it, and it is just one little switch with one little LED....)

you can..... and being that you never use it that shouldn't be a problem, just that if you did and had the fogs and the cig at the same time it could demand more amps and pop the fuse......... just things to know...... also gotta remember that it's not just the led on the switch that's using power you are also sending a signal to the relay to turn it on thus using more amps

Wait though, I have custom driving lights/fogs on my car too.

Is it possible that you might have wired them up funny?

Not sure why they would still work, so thats probably a negatory..

But with the wiring on my fogs, when I flick the lights off, the led goes off too. I still need to clean up the install and find a suitable mount point for my switch, or the fact that I may just integrate the system with an auto lights/fogs stock switch for clean looks. Possibly.. I'd get a sun sensor and the needed gizmos, too.

well, i tried tapping into the cig lighter; but it ended up being a constant power source. so it does me no good from where i'm already at. :confused:

i dont think i wired it wrong, i didnt come with instructions, but i though it was pretty straight forward.
i wired the power for the fog lights themselves straight to the battery as well as the power wire for the LED switch. i grounded the fog lights to the negative battery terminal and the switch to the steering column mount (of something like that)

a couple people have told me to tap into the radio's switched power source, but the pioneer instruction manual specifically says not to tap into the stereo's power wires for auxilaury purposes.....but it is just one little LED its powering. or is it? does the switch take much power to actually turn the fogs on and off?

Evil, he sounds like he's got a fog light unit that has a status light for when it has power and when it's on(usualy red then green) that's why he's got a constant on light.



....... Due to my stupidity I forgot to observe the age of your car......... yes you can tap of the turn on lead for the deck, but you will need to fuse this to keep from killing the fuse for the deck..... I tried to find a fuse listing for a first gen but I was un able, could you post up in-car fuses you have and I might be able to find another source point for power.

Again on the switch not only lights the led but also sends a signal to the relay unde the hood that (like a switch) turns on the fogs..... which does take a bit of power.

is there nothing else i can tap into other than the headunit's power supply? i just dont want to end up somehow damaging or voiding the warantee of my headunit....

again not knowing how the first gens are set up the only thing that's known for sure is off the remote to the deck......... though you could check under the hood set ups, see if there is a constant 12 volts or it only switches on when the car is on.......... something like the fuel pump, wiper motor, interior blower motor......... with out looking myself I can't say for sure..... gotta check into it yourself.......

when checking the under hood fuse box, observe what is all connected/fused/relayed(they usualy have a few relays in there too) if the majority if not all of the items in the box are only on when the car is on or in the acc possition then you'll only need to connect the wire to the positive feed into the box and you should have your power only when the car is on or in acc.....

if not, I'll try to swing by AutoZone and check thier repair manual see if I can't find any power sorces.

i tried all the fuses in the fuse box under the hood and they all had constant power (i had a voltage tester/meter). but things like the wiper do only come on when the key it turned on or in the ACC position. so should i just try tapping into the wipers anyway?

is there a way you can pull the fuse box up and get access to the bottom where the wires are??
If so, you can then find the 12 volt signal wire that is connected to the wiper relay(and anything else that's connected to that signal feed) and connect a fuse holder to it and then connect it to the lead to the switch........... this should be all you need........

yeah, i can get to the wire under the fuse box. there is very little room to work with because they is not much access wire, but i think i can do it. i'll try tapping into that today.
