Have a cell phone. Bought myself a hand's free gizmo. The speaker hooks on anywhere, I chose the handle to the glove box. One wire hooks up to the phone, the other to the lighter. Motorola...sounds great and great pick up.
Plugged it in to the cigarette lighter. Supposedly charges when plugged in also.
Turn off the engine and there's no power to the lighter. It has to be plugged into the outlet in the console outlet, inside the console CD storage box.
What a pain. Unplug here. Clean out CDs there. Plug it in. Let it sit. Come back to car. Unplug from center console box and plug into lighter in ashtray. Put everything back in console box.
At least GM has an outlet on the side of the console near the floor that always works.
For you guys in Southern Cal and FLA., this feature was designed by IMAGINEERING.

theres a fuse in the fusebox, top right that the socket looks differnt from the rest,it's got 3 spots instead of 2. it's for yer lighter. it's to make it either work with ignition or always on. just change the position from what it is now, to the other position, and yer problem is solved.

or just take a look at the diagram on the cover and u will find it.

it'll take you longer getting the cover on and off than it will to actually move it.

Hopefully with an ashtray lighter that always works...soon!
It's the one by the door panel, not under the hood. (If that is what you meant) All you do is move the fuse a half slot over and you have power all the time. I did the same thing to mine for my cell phone. :)

Hey CapitalCity RT now I think an apology is due to the DC designers who you called Disneyland workers. Guess they are correct when they say 90% of owners never read the owners manual.

Hay Otto,

The lot I bought my car from sets up a free steak dinner and while your chew-in on a cow the service manager explains most all the things they see come into their shop that people do wrong. They also offer a service van that comes out to you and does minor things like the fuse move. You guys may want to lean on your dealers to provide a little better support.

The web site for my dealer is:
web page

They sale a larger volume of RAMS but hay, I get the same support as the buba's.

So when do all of you want to move to Austin.

Hey Otto

I did read the entire manual except for the lighter page. Although I smoke, I never have in the car, hence I wasn't concerned about this piece of hardware. My wife bought me a cell phone a couple of weeks ago and it was a pain in the ass to talk and hold this Subaru WRX sized phone so I went to the Bell Mobility dealer and he sold me this gizmo.
Then I discovered my problem. Well you guys were basking in the heat and dry weather, we here in Ottawa were being hit with 10cm of wet, sticky snow and it will be a very white xmas, including my black car.
Can't figure out though why the default setting is not for it too work all the time.
Anyhow, life's a ***** and I gotta screw around with fuse box covers and such, or maybe, take it to the dealer tomorrow and let them do it!
Yeah,, that's the ticket.

Thanks for everything guys

open drivers door, pull the panel, move the fuse, close panel, close drivers door.

for what needs to be done is not worth a trip to the dealer, unless u like going there and waiting around.

it's so easy...it's scary.

Personally, I think it's perfect. Here's a true story from my manager on my current project (names have been changed to protect the innocent):

Henry had a rental car. He plugged his cell phone into the lighter socket as usual to charge it. He normally leaves it in the car because it doesn't work in the building. It happened to be a long, 13 hour day. So at 9pm, he comes out to go back to the hotel. Surprisingly, the rental won't start. Why? Because the cell phone drained the battery.

The same thing can happen with a radar detector. In short, DC engineers had a good idea. If you don't like it, that's what the fuse is for. Now off with ye!

Well, it takes some intense seeking to find the page that outlines this feature. Anyhow, I found it. We in Canada do not get a video with our cars. Either DC thinks we in Canada don't own VCRs or maybe we're smarter. I guess here is one Canuck who blew it but I'll take the steak anyhow.
To tell you the truth, I kinda enjoy this type of conversation as opposed to mods. At least I bought the car based upon what it is as opposed to seeking ways to alter the components.
I'm not bitchin'. Everyone can do what they want. I just wanted to know why my gizmo wouldn't work with the power off. The purpose of this forum actually came to light by having fellow Trep owners solve other Trep owners problems/questions and I am grateful.

Happy Holidays to all and a safe, prosperous New Year.

I actually found out about that feature here a few months ago. As for Canadians being smarter... not the ones I work with. But they're from Quebec, not Ottawa. I'm sure most of us bought the cars for what they are. But it's fun to make things more you, as opposed to just like everyone else. If we wanted to be the same, we would've bought Accords or Camrys.

You can always turn a Camry or Accord into a RICER!!!!! :D :D :D

Having been born in Montreal, Quebec and relocated into Ottawa, Ontario, I'm one of the smarter ones, except for that dumb power outlet. The topic really does not pop out of the page and hit you in the face. I also did not see hte listing in the Table of Contents, but anyhow.

I prefer leaving the car as is. It will never become a rocket, no matter how much you tinker with it. I'll take it for what it is and leave the tinted headlight covers and nite glow sticks to you young 'uns.
The car is leased so it is no use investing money into it and the warranty is fine for the first 3 years (5 on the powertrain) so I don't want to fk around with it.

Nice black R/T. Kind of looks like mine, but cleaner and without the leather.
Mine is sooooooooooo dirty it's embarrassing. With the snow, sleet and slush, then the tons of salt laid down, I'm not even taking it to the car wash. They're calling for snow flurries on and off for the next few days even though we'll be about or above 32 degrees. The salt hits the pavement as fast as the snow.
Maybe when the sun shines for 2 consecutive days and it's not hellish cold, I'll take it to the car wash.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!
