I'm now the proud driver of a 1996 VW Jetta. Ok so I'm not proud but the Intrepid is gone far, far away, and I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight.:crying:

Water pump went on it today, and of course I was far from home when it happened. Only 6,000 kms past the recommended belt/water pump change. Don't take any chances with your LHs ladies and gentlemen...do it when it's due! My bill is unfortunately going to be humongous when it didn't have to be, had I done it a couple weeks ago. Towing costs were covered by CAA, thank God as it had to go about 100 kms.

I'm sorry. I know just how you feel. My 2000 2.7 died at 105K and I sold my precious Irene after I bought Iris, my blue 3.5. Yeah, I name my cars, so what.

I had a bellyache for two days after she was gone, not seeing her in my garage anymore. That was over a year ago and I still get a little misty-eyed when I see an Inferno Red 2.7 on the street today.

LOL.... offtopic but when i read this part all i could think of was that little irish guy in family guy "Yeah, I name my cars, so what." which should be followed by ... "wanna fight about it?"

I thought the trep was gone indefinitely, its just temporarily off duty, thats more appropriate LOL.

Thank god Im not the only person here who names their cars, my first one was named Erika and I ended up rolling her over. My new one is named Amanda and she needs some work but I love her just the same. Still hurts to see a green 1st gen concorde going down the road though.

Do you know what they are going to charge you yet?? Many places vary on the water pump change by hundreds of dollars.... I know because it looked messy to do so I thought about shopping it out-- ended up buying the parts and having a friend of mine help make it not an 8 hour process--- sucks that it was so close to your meet-- hope everything works out

Canadian Tire ( a rediculously overpriced chain store ) quoted me $800+ for the pump, timing belt, and tensioner pulley, and told me that usually when a pump goes to the extent mine did that it probably caused some other indeterminable ( until they got it all apart ) damage, so to expect the actuall cost to be a bit higher, and this is plus tax as well.

$800 Is in the middle Range so as long as you are happy with the quality of parts and service thats all that should matter--- but don't look up the price of parts cuz you will make yourself sick to see how they go from that to as much as 800/1200 dollars for the install... although after you ripped your front clip off for the first time-- the price starts to sound a little better than all the bald knux from turning wrenches where there is no room-- kinda like that old autostick wiring-- if you had hands the size of a penny all is fine LOL...

The first place that looked at it ( in case it was just a hose or something minor ) and quoted me the $800 is also an $85/hr shop rate. They were gouging me quite a bit on parts too, they wanted $195 for the belt, $185 for the pump, $65 for the pulley. I'm going to call the dealer on Monday and see how much they tell me....just for shits and giggles.

Ouch.....
Well, at least the timing belt didn't go!!
2 years ago, when I had my 99, I had the Timing Belt/WP done for $500 (with parts)
Hopefully, the 04 won't need that for a couple of years yet!!

If your accessory belts are even marginal, have them replaced as well.

It turns out it is definately the water pump. So new pump, timing belt along with all the other belts, tensioner pulley, and lower rad hose ( just for kicks ) with labour is going to be $650.00, so I threw in an oil change, and tire rotation to make it an even $700.

Damn, I wish you would have known the pump was on the way out, we could have swapped the belt and pump here!

Good thing it didnt loose the belt. Glad its back on the road again.

Yeah well, hindsight is 20/20 right. Would rather have given you my money too!

When the mechanic called me he said my timing belt looked like new, I know it hasn't been done in the last 70,000 miles, so told him to change it and he was hesitant...right up to when I asked him how long he would guarantee that it wouldn't go.
