Is my tranny toast? NO! Just a sensor!

While driving home tonight, my 2000 Intrepid RT shifted funny early in the trip...a delayed then hard 2-3 shift. It seemed ok for the next mile and shifted OK as I accelerated on the expressway. As I exited the ramp and stopped at the traffic light, it downshifted very hard. On acceleration, it was in 2nd and would not downshift to first or upshift to 3rd, even using auto-stick. It was stuck in 2nd for the last mile home. Also i noticed the check engine light came on (not sure when, but definitely during the ride home).

1) is the check engine light related to the trans or something else?
2) does this sound like the trans is shot?
3) suggestions on where in the north Philly burbs to get it fixed?

nope..your sensors are shot all u got to do is replace them..ill find u more info

One of the common problems with our transmissions is the input and output sensors that go bad

When the input sensor goes bad your car will only drive in 2nd gear, this is also known as limp mode

When the output sensor goes your speedometer will not work

Both sensors are on the driver's side of the transmission and require a 1" deepwall socket to remove, you may also need some extensions to reach them

Here are the part numbers for both:

Mopar 4800878 Input Speed Sensor
Mopar 4800879 Output Speed Sensor

If you buy them form the dealer expect to pay about $50.00 for the pair, many have bought from www.oem-car-parts.com or local auto parts stores and found them much cheaper

One word of advice, if you have one bad sensor spend the extra money and replace them both, well worth the extra $$ to avoid having to crawl under the car again if the second one fails

Apparently it's a do it yourself job. Should change both sensors at the same time if one goes, because the other may not be far behind.

I bought the sensors...$20 each from NAPA. Now to get my fat A$$ under the car to install them!

Would a failed sensor cause the check engine light to be on?

It might not be the sensors!

I had this happen on my 2002 ES and it was the solenoid pack.

The pack is mounted on the valve body, it's a fairly involved job. It takes about 3 hours.

Whenever the tranny is serviced for ANY malfunction, a complete flush and filter change is strongly recommended! Dirt and metal shavings mess up these solenoid packs and increase wear on the whole mechanism.

A bad solenoid pack has the same symptoms as a bad input speed sensor. Both give the P0700 code, so you need to get it scanned by a mechanic. You can't check TCM codes witht the key trick.

P0700 just means that the TCM has detected a problem and has requested that the PCM turn on the check engine light. Basically, this code is telling you to scan the TCM instead of the PCM.

yea shelly it does sound like the sensors. if you can pick em up today/tom, i can coem up and help ya do them this weekend, there easy to do, i did one last yr at carlisle lol took me bout 5 min to do. i can weven bring my code reader and check that engline light as well

You guys nailed it...replacing the 2 sensors did the trick. Thanks again to Aaron for making quick work of the replacement.

Hmmm...something is still not right. While in manual mode, everything is normal. But if regular automatic, the trans is shifting funny...occasional delayed shifts and sometimes it will not down shift during hard acceleration.

Any thoughts?

hmm i would say give it a couple days, it might just be the computer relearning itself, it had probably adpated to the old sesnors as they were wearing and now with new ones it has to adapt a lil, but keep me informed

Perhaps resetting the computer by disconnecting the negative cable for 15 mins may help.

Uh Oh! It's doing it again...Slipping real bad. Aaron's code scanner reads errors p0700, p0733 and p0734. The fluid now smells burnt. I think this is gonna cost me.

the sensors were replaced this weekend. The fluid was just replaced 3 months ago. the car has 60,000 miles on it.

Suggestions appreciated.

What should a good rebuild cost? What about a new or remanufactured trans from PowerDemon? What do they charge? HELP!

BTW, last month I put on new tires...they are 235-55/17's...a tad larger than stock. Would this have caused any problems?

What kind of transmission fluid was added? I hope that it was ATF+4 tranny fluid. And not some cheap knock off brand.
And / or it could be that infamous "bump shift" that some 2G owners expierence. That might require a TCM reflash.

The trans flush was done at the local Dodge dealer. One can only hope (and pray) that they used the correct Mopar fluid.

Well instead of dumping money into a new tranny... get your fluid changed to ATF+4 (with new filter), and it could be something as simple as a new TCM would fix your problem. Exahust all possibilities first. Like I said above: TCM reflash?
