Jeep Compass price starts at $15,985

DETROIT -- The 2007 Jeep Compass has a base sticker price of $15,985, including shipping, the company said Tuesday.

The Compass is a crossover, moving Jeep away from its traditional off-road roots. It shares a platform with the Dodge Caliber hatchback and forthcoming Jeep Patriot. The vehicles will be built in Belvidere, Ill.

The Compass will reach showrooms in the third quarter.

"I don't think there is a risk," says Joe Eberhardt, Chrysler group executive vice president of global sales and marketing. "If we moved the entire brand in that direction, there would be a huge risk of dilution. If we made iconic Jeeps less capable we would have turned off buyers."

The Saturn Vue, Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are the Compass' chief competitors, says Michael Berube, Jeep marketing senior manager.

Chrysler will not disclose sales goals. The company expects the compact SUV segment to almost double to 600,000 units by 2010.

The Compass' base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder generating 172 hp. A five-speed manual transaxle is standard. Side-curtain airbags, electronic stability control and traction control are standard.

The Compass 4x4 has a base sticker price of $17,585. The Compass Limited's base sticker price is $20,140. Base sticker price of the Compass Limited 4x4 is $21,740. All prices include shipping.

The target audience is 25- to 35-year-olds, Berube says. About 60 percent are expected to be women.

The Compass also will be launched in international markets in the third quarter.
