Ok, I've been eying a nice 2nd gen police Trep located in a small resort town. The thing is always sitting out in front of the station so I hope it has had little use and I figure being a small community where most go south in the winter the car will have little abuse.
I'd love to get my hands on it but I'm not sure how to go about it. I'm going to just walk in the station tomorrow and ask if they have plans to sell/auction the vehicle. I just feel like a dope walking in and asking a cop if the department wants to sell the cruiser. Probably lock me up thinking I'm some kind of nut.

Checked some prices on the R/T model which is what I think the police package is closest too and estimating maybe 65,000+ miles I was think somewhere around $6,000 - 7,000 depending on the overall condition.

Will see what happens.

Only problem I see is that those engines take alot of abuse. The body/frame maybe not, but cops sit and idle trying to catch people speeding. Me personally, I would not buy it. If it is cheap go for it. Assuming they sell it.

i talked to a cop one day about that and he said that the exhaust rusts bad on the cruisers, cause they sit and condensation gets in there.

This is true, those motors sit and run all day, 24/7, idle on the highway, go from 40 to 100 at random intervals and a ran into **** and ran over **** all the time, not a good way to go if your looking to save money...

They are amazing vehicles having the 150 MPH speedo, no carpet on floor, and various other additions, but as noted, the engines go through hell all the time.
I'm not the first to buy a decommissioned cruiser to learn there are existing problems. If they are planning on selling it, like any other vehicle, take a test drive.
The suspension on REVENGE was popping pretty bad, and there was a small AC leak that the dealership warned me about. They took care of these two in their garage.

IMO
The R/T and fuzz packages are different.
The fuzz package is the very stiff suspension, it's nice to take corners doing 60! Seriously though, I'm not stupid enough to attempt that.
The car takes off like a bat out of hell, it makes a good sleeper for being over 2.5 tons.
That and other bells and whistles.

The price sounds about right, I paid a hair over $7k for mine.

The engine and the transmission are my biggest concerns. I've taken the constant idle into consideration and this town has no highway jurisdiction, it is several miles from any highway and everything within the town is the usual 25-35mph. I'm sure the car has been goosed but it does not sit on the highway waiting for speeders. Ive actually never seen it move. The running joke w/ my buddy is the transmission died so they keep it parked out front to advertise the station name.
They only have 3 full time cops. One Crown Vic and 2 Treps. This is the only police cruiser I would entertain simply because of the small town in which it is located, hoping for light use.

My chances are slim, imo. I would guess they keep their cars longer then a big city department.

I wish Dodge still made the Intrepid, dammit!

Stopped in the station today and talked w/ the officer. They have no plans to sell the Trep yet but maybe next year. We talked a little about the reliability and he said the only thing they have done to it was change the brakes. No other complaints. Surprised the guy chatted as long as he did w/ me.
Oh well, maybe next year.

Did he say how many miles he had exactly? Get the VIN number and plug it into that link someone posted before.

I paid 2600 for mine, but it cost me 2200 more to fix the engine. It runs great, now, and I love it. Wish it had a few more gadjets, though.
