Firstly, this might be important that my trep overheated about a week ago. It was the thermostat, no biggie, right? Well it was HOT for about 5 minutes (That I noticed). I let it cool off, drove it home (bout 3 miles). Replace thermo and everything was cool. (literally!-hehe)

Now..yesterday, I'm driving and about 60 and someone slowed up in front of me. I let off the gas and got back on it and there was no gear, just high RPM's. I pulled over thinking, I'm out $2,000 already. To my surprise, it jumped back ino gear (2nd) and thought I was gona be cool until it wouldn't shift (limp mode).

Well, after reading this EXCELLENT forum, I discovered what limp mode was. Is is possible that the Input/Output sensor is still bad or can I assume that because it's trying to go into 3rd and winding out that the gear is out and that it is just going back down to 2nd to get me home? I was told that if 3rd gear is out and it winds to 4,000RPM, that it will kick down to 2nd. I hope this was enough information.

I want to keep my TREP!!!!!!!! Don't tell me I have to spend 2K to do so!

Dalejr08, I agree with jfsram. Grab the codes by using the key on/off method. Read this thread: http://www.dodgeintrepid.net/forums...&threadid=25956

By the way, I have a 95 Intrepid too, and my home town is Carlyle! Small world, eh?

We live about 3-5 miles away from each other then? lol....you wouldn't happen to have that scanner would you? Come on over and have a drink....tell me what's wrong with her, lol. I'm going to check the codes and see if the give me something additional. I just don't want to pay 2K to get it fixed....it's a long tow to a dealer. Any good transmission guys around the area? I will post the codes....thanks guys!

using your key will not get the codes out of the tranny computer.

this is a problem mine had... it was suppsedly in need of a rebuild.

I think it was just the solonoid pack or whaterver it is that costs $200 to replace on your own..... but who knows.

LOL....yea the fluid was right on the money. I added a 1/2 quart just to see, no difference. That silonoid may be the cause, eh?

Properly checking fluid in Tranny....???? When I first had my issue (Car was warm) it was hitting right on the "HOT" mark. Does anyone think the overheating last week could have maybe triggered anything? Also, looking back....After it ran hot, I remember hearing some wierd noises every now and then.... a whining noise of some sort? It seemed to be motor related whining since I could hear no de/increase in noise in neutral or park. Just a thought. Is it worth it guys to buy this 200.00 silonoid and it not be it? Or apply that 200.00 towards the dreaded rebuild?

On a related note, I once had a 88 dodge daytona that ran hot and it somehow messed up something. (Glide pins?) maybe someone knows what I'm talking about? It's just wierd how it's been running great, overheated due to a failed thermotat and then a week later went out. So far the best news I have heard was from LaFrad.....of course he said what I wanted to hear :)

Never been replaced bjlv, 151,000 ..... Maybe it's just time but wouldn't mind a cheaper route given the car's costly history.

Replaced : Main wiring harness, timing belt, water pump, driver side head (Dealer Screw up - had a bad gasket, they broke a bolt and then drilled a whole through my water jacket but didn't tell me they did it), numerous A/C issues (Still continously leaks water on my floorboard dispite 4 visits to a mechanic whom replaced the A/C clutch and cleaned out the drainage and replaced the drainage hose). Sorry for the long post guys. Just worried about my baby, wife wants me to sell it as is now. :(

jfsram has it right. A good tranny shop (not AAMCO) will have the ability to scan the TCM for any stored codes. It doesn't make sense to throw money at the tranny. What year is your trep? Have you ever changed the fluid and filter? At 151K it has gone longer than most but may still have some life in it. When you get it scanned be sure to ask for the CVI's. Will tell you how much clutch wear is left. Just my $0.02

DaleJr, I would try the easy and cheap stuff and work my way up to the transmission rebuild/replacement. The input and output transmission sensors are well-known for malfunctioning or failing. If it were me, I would remove both input and output sensors and clean them really well. I am not certain, but I think these sensors have magnets to sense the transmission's action. These sensors can attract tiny metal fragments and effectively "short circuit". If your car has 151,000 miles, then there very well might be fragment build-up. I would clean them off really well and stick them back in. I also would drop the transmission pan and change the fluid and filter. If those things didn't help then I would be tempted to take it into a shop. I wasn't aware that the first generations wouldn't display transmission codes, but getting any such codes would be very helpful. As far as the solenoid pack, I know nothing about this.

If you end up having to replace the transmission, I would go with a junk yard replacement: click here for a car-part.com listing of transmissions in Illinois from low miles to high. You might disagree with me, but I wouldn't pay big bucks to have your transmission rebuilt.

By the way, which size engine do you have?

Sorry....It's a 95, 3.5L ES - Power everything/Spoiler/16" Alum Wheels, etc It's pretty sweet. No mods except for my wife scraping a concrete "gas pump stopper" :) I bought it at 125,000....the people who had it before me didn't take really good care of it at all. I haven't had the fluid/filter changed at all since I had it either (25,000 miles). Someome told me that if it hasn't been changed in a while that it's best to leave it alone? That didn't make much sence to me but.....maybe I should try changing it now, lol.

I'll try the sensors ($17.24 each @Napa) and the fluid....al in all maybe this will work. It'll be a few days until I can do that...unil then if anyone has anything else, I will be checking. (Mainly concerned because it is ACTUALLY trying to hit 3rd (Winding up) and then dies down to 2nd gear...that scares me...makes me think 3rd gear is gone and nothing cheap. Thanks so much guys....this site is awesome!

Well, just for more information I thought I would catch the guys just above up to speed that are having the same issue. Since it originally showed a problem (1st posted message) I tried a few things like adding just a hair of fluid (Half quart) and this didn't help at all......take off/shifts to 1st np, shifts to 2nd np, then hits 3rd and revs up, let off the gas and catches back down to second.

Now, since then seems that reverse is not working now (been 3 weeks) and 1st and second went out. But 1st and second came back today? Wierd? Maybe the thing just needs good fresh fluid and all is well? But if I take anything apart and change fluid, sensors and solenoid then that is going to run me some time and money. I spoke with a guy today and he agreed to look at it, he works at the local dodge dealer and I will let you guys know what the problem was so you won't have to take yours somewhere. I just don't have the money to guess and it be wrong.

Keep your fingers crossed for me guys!

Rebuild

All too many times I find a good thread and noone ever comes back after they were going to try to fix it.....so this is efforts on helping the next man.

Well, I took it in and they ripped my tranny apart and called me in to look at it. All I could do was shake my head. They told/showed me what was wrong and it was the "overdrive hub" I have no clue what this is as I have only installed 3 trannys in my time and would never try ripping one apart. I had no idea how many parts there were in those things. I guess 50? Anyways the overdrive hub, converter was full of metal and a main shaft something was broken so I guess I am looking back now glad I didn't get the new sensors. You guys are great and I think this website is great.

So, after 1200.00 rebuild I was so happy to get my car back...I drove it another 20 miles until it broke down today....A whole new post, maaybe the guy did something wrong? anyways, that's a new post.
