In an open letter posted on Apple's website, Steve Jobs has announced the company will offer early iPhone adopters a store credit to offset yesterday's drop in price. Buyers who paid full price and are not eligible for price protection will receive $100 in credit at Apple's online store. Details will be announced next week. Although carriers, often drop the price of high-end phones after a few months of sales, the suddenness and steep drop of yesterday's price cut took many owners by surprise, creating a wide-spread negative reaction.

I got this in my weekly dumbest things on wall street email

1. iPhone Bubble Bursts

The iPhone isn't aging well.

Apple (AAPL - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) surprised Wall Street Wednesday by slashing 33% off the price on the heavily hyped phone. The cut comes barely two months after the iPhone went on sale, to great expectations.

"Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone," CEO Steve Jobs thundered back on Jan. 9, according to an engadget.com transcript of his MacWorld keynote speech. "Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything."

Well, maybe not everything. Even as consumers lined up this summer to buy their fashionable iPhones, some observers were wondering about sticker shock.

Skeptics suggested the iPhone's price tag -- initially topping out at $599, with a two-year cellphone service contract -- would scare some gadget lovers away. The chatter got louder after Apple and retail partner AT&T (T - commentary - Cramer's Take - Rating) reported weaker-than-expected iPhone activations.

At first, Apple responded by saying the iPhone was off to a great start. The company added this week that "iPhone customer satisfaction scores are higher than we've ever seen for any Apple product."

But in the same breath, Apple cut the iPhone's price to $399. Jobs said the move would make iPhones "affordable for even more customers."

Of course, it also means the people who rushed to AT&T stores at the end of June to get the revolutionary device overpaid by $200.

Bet those iPhone customers are feeling less satisfied now.

Dumb-o-Meter score: 93. The company said Thursday it will give existing iPhone customers $100 in store credit to smooth over ruffled feathers. "We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers," Jobs explained.

Ok for real though. All the people that bought these things when they first came out have no reason to *****. That's how pricing works on electronics. When they first come out, they cost an arm and a leg and they'll eventually go down in price. Yes, the iPhone went down in price a lot faster than most products, but that's the risk you take anytime you buy any electronic item.

So to those who were complaining after the price drop announcement, you need to STFU! Seriously! You're lucky Apple is being a pussy about it and giving you $100 in credit.

And regarding the people who got the full difference refunded, you would have had the right to do so anyways be law. By law you have the right to return any cell phone within 2 weeks for a full refund. So don't think that Apple is doing you any favors. They got off easy cause they don't have to deal with tens of thousands of returned iPhones just to have their customers turn around and buy new ones.

They are doing them a favor, somewhat. They charge a 10% restocking fee if you opened the box, so that means if you returned yours and then bought a new one, you'd only be getting $140 back. Apple offers the 14 day price guarantee on all their products, which is something most companies don't. I give them credit because they're a lot bigger on customer satisfaction than many companies these days.

Although, I think the fact that you can't even try your iphone out until you commit to at least a $1400 contract is really messed up. Everything but the phone should work.

x2 + apple & steve can stuff it. i like itunes music but come on. way over priced phones. people are buying it for the cool factor when theres other phones/pda's that own the iphone for much less. even at the price drop the iphone i feel is still overpriced.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can just add the iphone data plan to my dad's family talk plan for $20 or if mine's one of the plans that doesn't qualify. It might be nice to have the visual voicemail and unlimited data, but if I have to get a whole new plan I'll just stick to using it with my old plan and no EDGE.

Maybe cause the iPhone is more than just a cellphone, it falls under a different category. But on one of those shows like Dateline or something, they said that by law, all cellphones are returnable for full credit for 14 days and even the service itself can be terminated and the customer only pays for just the minutes used. Now whether or not retailers actually follow the letter of the law is another thing. I'm sure people don't know their rights or the laws concerning cellphones and just allow retailers to charge them fees.

But as far as price protection goes, most retailers have some sort of price protection guarantee on their products. And being that Apple is both the manufacturer and retailer, it can get kind of confusing, but the Apple Store's price protection policy is no different that any other larger retailer's policy. Again, it's nothing special.

For example, here's Best Buy's price guarantee...

Already bought? We'll refund you the price difference, plus an additional 10% of that difference up to 30 days after your purchase (14 days on select categories*, 60 days on HDTVs purchased from 6/3/07 through 9/29/07).

* Select Categories include desktop computers, notebooks, projectors, monitors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar detectors and video games purchased as used.
So as you can see. Not only is Apple's 14 day only about half of what Best Buy's, Best Buy even gives you an additional 10% for the hassle.

apple is trying to fool the world. is the iphone cool? yes. is it new stylish? yes? is it more than a phone? NOPE. not until apple gets off their high horses and release some apps that allow you to actually do something more than touch a fancy screen to play gay apple games or look at the same google maps your razr can. besides the visual voicemail (big gimmik, honestly who's voicemail are you NOT going to check?) whatelse is new?

to the person using the razr before the the iphone......the iphone is the ****. the to person using the blackjack, 8525,any current blackberry...........the iphone is BULL****.

to the at&t rep that sells the iphone its just that an Iphone.

I still can't bring myself to pay $750 deposit that I am required to pay to just have a line with AT&T. It is B.S. I mean good Lord who is going to pay that much for a deposit on a cell phone? I paid less on the deposit on my apartment. Of course all the carriers want an arm and a leg from me because of my credit history, or lack thereof.

I knew you were supposed to be able to, but it said just some plans qualify. I had mine hacked so I could use the old sim from my razr in it, but it was gonig to suck having to rehack it every time I updated the software on the phone and having wireless internet anywhere is pretty cool. So, I was able to put just the data plan so I sucked it up and added it for $20.

nice.....i think they tell you its only compatable with certain plans because some old old old family plans arent able to add lines any more since the family plans are different now. but as lon as you alread have the service you can add an iphone to it.........adding a line to a $39.99 family plan (which isnt around any more) is a different story.

Just gotta add this. It's from New Rules by Bill Maher 9-14-07...

New Rule:
Stop bitching that Apple cut the price of the iPhone. Early adopters always pay a premium. "Early adopters" being a business term meaning "dipshits who stand in line for six hours... for a freaking phone." It's not a price cut. It's a repeal on the "Nerd Tax." If you didn't have to be the first on your block to have the latest gizmo, you'd now have an extra $200 to spend on your imaginary girlfriend.

I bought one for my wife last week. I was able to add it to my family plan. Just cost the additional $20 for the data plan. For $299 it blows the **** out of my Verizon XV6700 (work is paying for it). The interface and the browser is so much slicker than Windows Mobile. I think it's great the competition will push Microsoft to improve Windows Mobile. A decent browser would be nice for starters.

Yup, they led me add mine for $20 too. If you plan on getting a case for your wife, let me know. Mine sat in the box for a week while I read literally dozens of reviews to figure out the best one.

Thanks but she already bought this one

Wouldn't have been my choice, but different environment when it's a woman who is going to put it in a purse vs a man who's going to have it in a pocket or clipped to a belt.
