It turns out I need a new MAP sensor. So I went on ebay and bought 1. The seller said it fits 1998-2003 2.7L Intrepids. I have a 2004 Intrepid so he said it wouldn't fit. As far as I know, the 2004 engines are the same as 1998-2003s, right? Also the Haynes Repair Guides have 1998-2003 editions and also 1998-2004 editions.. So I'm confused!

I looked at the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Chrysler parts catalogs and they indicate the part number for a 2.7L MAP Sensor is: 04896002AC


For 2000-2001 the part number is 04896131AA
For 1998-1999 the part number is 04606130

I suspect the difference between the 1998-2001 and 2002-2004 ranges is the electrical connector. It was typical for many engine sensors to have changed between the 1998-2001 and 2002-2004 year ranges because of the the redesign of the PCM(Engine Controller) and associated wiring.
Although they all might physically interchange as far as bolting up, the big difference is in the electrical connections.

It sounds like the particular aftermarket MAP sensor your looking at might fit only 1998-2001 2.7L engines and not 2002-2004. I'm basing that on the info I got from the OEM parts catalogs.

This is the part number 04896131AA. According to the seller it's a Genuine Mopar part. So will it fit my 2004 Intrepid? I hope! If not, what's the worse that could happen? Thanks.

The worse that could happen is that you won't be able to put the electrical connector on it. I suggest voiding the transaction or returning it.

The part number that's correct and will fit is: 04896002AC

You need a MAP sensor from a 2002-2004 engine.

The difference between 1998-1999 and 2000-2001 engines is one digit which is unusual but not a completely different part number. So the Compatible year ranges will be 1998-2001 and 2002-2004.

The 2000 FSM indicates this pin arrangement:

And the 2002 FSM indicates this pin arrangement:

X-X-X

So if it's a 1998-2001 sensor it will not fit the connector on your 2003.

Hey bud.. thanks for the help. You were right. I got the right sensor from my job today.. Came home and compared the 2 sensors. The sensors were different and the one I bought 1st wouldn't fit. I will be returning it to the seller.. Also, when I took out the old sensor, it had motor oil on the part that goes into the manifold. Is this normal? Or should I get the car checked out by a mechanic.. I drove the car for 5 days with a bad map sensor and I read in forums that it is potentially dangerous for the engine to drive with a bad map sensor.

Ah, the smell of oil in the upper plenum in the morning, nothing could be finer! Check the pcv valve, if it's OEM replace it with an aftermarket, I had oil getting sucked into the upper plenum and replaced my pcv valve with one from Advance Auto Parts, problem solved. Many of the OEM ones may rattle when shaken like they should, but they actually don't close the way they are supposed to and allow a lot of oil to be drawn into the engine..

You are quite correct Sir and I offer a hearty apology...between work, beers, cars, beers, family, beers, and...whats the other thing? Oh yeah, beer, I've been so busy I haven't been keeping up with my posting to my threads. May a thousand camel's fleas infest my armpits. Yes, that tip you provided most certainly resolved my oil intake issue on the mighty stroker. Thank you for supplying that information my friend.:D

Ok, I just came across the same problem. My new motor is a 3.5 with a 3-pin Map sensor and I accidentally crushed the sensor while chaining the motor to the hoist. I mistakenly grabbed a couple of 4-pin map sensors while I was in the yard last month, and wasn't able to find any 3-pin versions in the yard today. Before I go out and blow $53 on a new sensor, can I splice in one of these 4-pin connectors (i cut one out and brought it home) in place of the 3-pin connector?
