My '95 Intrepid steers like a bumpercar - help!

'95 Intrepid, 3.5 - 110,000 miles.

It seems like the steering wheel has a mind of its own. I was told that it has something to do with the rack. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Can it be done without special tools? Any idea as to how long something like this takes to fix?

The guy at the alingment shop says its about a $1000.00 job... :( But I'm pretty handy so if I can do it with regular shop tools, I can handle it.

Part numbers for the things I'll need would *really* help.

thanks,
Mope

there is a fix for it.. search the forums for it.

It goes something like this: the steering rack is mounted on 4 rubber bushings. these rubber parts get demolished after a time, and the whole rack just floats free (only the bolts there that the rubber used to mount too).
What you can do is make your own bushings. Scrape all the rubber out of the old mounting points, make some new things to hold it. (I used a somewhat Flexable form of nylon that my dad could get as scrap). you will need to get a front end alignment afterwards though, as the nylon won't be spaced exactly the same as the rubber used to be.

I hope this helps.. search the forums, it has exact mesaurements and everything for it.
