Let me start from the begining. I used to own a 1968 Charger. It was a great car---- I loved it. But i did sell it. I had been driving Fords since and had real good luck. But when the 1998 Intrepid came out it imediatly caught my eye. I bought one and paid cash for it. It road great and the performance was acceptale for a family car. I was satisified.

I do all my own service on my vehicles and I was keeping up with the service with my new baby. Then the trouble started. Here is the list.

Driver side window would not work. Dealer worked on it every 2-3 months till warantee went out.
Radiator fans went out . $600.00 (out of warentee)
Transmission sensor went out. $155.00
Tie rod ends went out. $160.00
Engine serpentine idler pully went out. $63.00
Right side half shaft /cv-joints went out $160.00
Oil pressure sensor leaking $22.00
Now its burning oil!!!! I cant believe it!!!!!
The front seal on the transmission is leaking also.
Last night my wife came in and told me that the heater motor only runs on high!!!!

I drive my old 1994 F150 and i haven't had this many problems. My truck ha 255,000 miles the Dodge has just over 85,000.

I am not mad but i am very disappointed in the quality of this car. Its a great looking car, but its a mechanical nightmare.

I am actually going to have to rebuild the engine to get the oil burning stopped--- thats a shame.

I don't thik I'll be buying any Chrysler products again.

no offense, but you had to join DI.net to tell us how shitty our cars are? we know and accept that there are problems and are just as frustrated as you. if you came for advice or to help, welcome. we're all in the same boat here.

Yes, we are all very aware of the problems that exist with our cars. Every car has its problems though.
"It road great and the performance was acceptale for a family car."
Plus they look sharp. Thats why we love them.

Don't compare trucks to cars. My '91 Ram is at about 150K and still on the original tranny with no signs of stopping. Mechanically, this truck is rock solid, just as my '71 Charger. Please don't let your bad experience with one car tarnish your entire view of Dodge, particularly the trucks.

As for my '93 ES, I did have the tranny rebuilt at 125K but nothing else except for AC condensor and other normal wear items. My Intrepid is a very sturdy car and still runs great! I would definitely recommend an Intrepid to anyone looking for space, performance, dependability, and style all in one package!

*sigh*... Let's have a little perspective here:

1.) The Intrepid is not a mechanical nightmare. Your Intrepid may have been one for you, but taken as a whole, the Intrepid is a good car.

2.) 98 was the first year of the 2nd-gen's. Have you ever driven a car/truck which was made in the first year of a particular generation that was without problems?

And yeah.. I too am curious why you joined. Are you here to complain about your car and predict doom for all of ours? Or are you here to get some advice?

If all of us here at dodgeintrepid.net wanted a perfect car, we wouldn't be driving these cars... or any other ones for that matter. This is a forum for Intrepid enthusiasts and those who want information and advice. It is not a gripe and complaint center.

If you're here to do more than just vent, welcome. :)

If you're here to just whine and complain, please leave.

Have a nice day.

I'm sorry for being blunt in the last post, but people who join just to complain and harass those of us who like our cars really annoy me. It's like going to an NAACP convention and yelling the N-word... just to get a rise out of everybody.

My apologies if you're not here to just complain and/or harass.

Certain times of the day are usually responsible for most emotional outbursts I have. It is not related to any particular sugar, caffeine, or other food deficit or surplus.

It's not necessarily about loyalty to DC... it's more about posting the right stuff in the right place.

Q. What's the right place?

A. Where it will be the most effective and where you're likely to hear from people who share your belief or experience; using the N-word at Strom Thurmond's next birthday party, for example.

my 94 LHS's engine went kaput aproximately 10 hours after i bought her, since then I've just been staring at it until my engine gets replaced. Most people would be pissed, but I still love the car. I justlook at it this way, it had a new tranny when I bought it, new brakes, lines, hoses, belts, filters, fluids, and when the engines done it will have a new engine... I'll pretty much have a mostly new car for under 6000 bucks...

Sorry for the rant, but it seems that if we are spending the kind of money we;; we should be getting a better product. This thing is a mousquito killer. Has anyone had this kind of a failure so early in the engine life. I mean, It looks like its going to be at least a valve job. But then again if I have to that far in I might as well pull the whole engine and get the rest.

Come to think of it; if I am going to do that I would just as soon pull the power team and go through both.

Its just disheartening to look out in the garage and see that georgous car with so many problems. I will complain but then again I'll fix it.

By the way its the 2.7 engine and I'll let you know how she looks when I get into it and start mic-ing it out

Ahh the joys of buying a USED car. Dodge makes wonderful engines and its usually the tranny that will go before the engine needs any major work. THe previous owner probably didnt maintain the engine very well.

Sorry to here about the problems, I've had my 95 for a year now and done no major work to it, and it's got 178 000km on it. I have heard the the early 2.7L were not the greatest engines. but you also have to remember that 98 was the first year of the new style, and every body always have problem with the new year designs, sorta the one that they have to shake all the bugs out of, that's way some wait to buy it the next year.

Never never never buy the 1st year of a new model. Look at Consumer Reports. All car makers have the most problems with the first year models. It seem to take 18 to 24 months to get the bugs out. By the 3rd year the quality seems to be the best and stay there untill. They change the model line again and it repeats its self all over again. Buying used cars is crap shoot at best. Some times you win some times you don`t.

i have no complaints with my intrepid. she has been to hell and back and she always askes for more. i have never seen a problem that cant be fixed. i still have my same tranny, engine. everything that that was always seemed unreliable. don't get me wrong i have had some issues with her but it's do to the daily pounding that i give her. I read of so many people here who race, beat and pummle their cars and when **** **** breaks they are like "why would it do that?, it's junk!"
You have to pay to play...deal with it.
i love my ride and i have never owned a car that could take so much punishment. the other gm and fords i've owned in the past couldn't withstand half the pain i dish out.
Also if you are going to trash your car on a daily basis, work on your own **** cause it's not that expensive. the only time you spent ungodly amounts of money is when you break your **** and pay someone else to do it.
When i'm at work and i see some young punk who beats the **** out of car and dosen't know how to fix it or doesn't want to learn..i'll charge the **** out of him. cause he deserves it IMO. Now if someone comes to me and is having problems and they have at least tryed to fix it themselves or are willing to be with me when i work on it and show interest...i'll just have them pay for parts and i'll fix for them for nuthing. cause i love to turn wrenches.
point being.. if you break it... stop being so damn lazy and learn to do it yourself and stop bitching.

Touchy, touchy...can't he get it off his chest. I did $8,000 in repairs between 68,000 and 84,000 miles on an very well maintained car. Thank god for the extended warranty!

Maybe you should learn to READ!!! I already stated that i do all my own work, so that is not the issue. I used to build NOS and blower engines for folks so I think I can handle the issues with this one. My only complaint was that this car was babied and still is an oil burner. I guess I just got lucky with my engine. By the way I don't "race, beat and pummle" my car. If I race its on the TRACK. Memphis Motorsports Park is right down the road.

I am actually thinking of getting the wife another car an converting the intrepid to rear wheel drive and a 360 under the hood. I have measured and it will fit with some front "frame" mods. Talk about sleeper. Nothing beats cubes under the hood. 400hp sounds sweet in an intrepid.
