I suppose I got post my systems here and get some input for improovements

my main computer for pretty much everything:

- AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor
- ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Motherboard
-> red aftermarket Processor cooler
- 500 Watt Hipro Power Supply
- ATI Radeonx1800XL 512MB video card
- 2GB DDR2 Ram @ 667Mhz
- Dual DVD/CD burners (Lite-On & Phillips)... 3 if you count the virtual drive
- 560GB SATA internal HD space
- 420GB exteranal HD
- Extra 5 port USB Pci extention
- Windows XP Professional Corperate edit. (screw Vista.... even Microsoft already gave up on it :D)
- Dual 19" LCD Monitors

next to it is my second system (dont quite know why but I have 3 computers infront of me), this one came together one by one by upgrading my main system... I pretty much got another system now, all it needs is a harddrive and a third monitor:

- Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz Single-Core Processor (old but still fast)
- MSI 945G Platinum Motherboard
-> blue aftermarket CPU Cooler
- 350 Watt Power Supply
- Nvidia 6800XT 256MB Video card
- 2GB DDR2 Ram @ 333Mhz
- Some old CD drive and an even older DVD burner that works when it wants too
- absolutely no HD space at the moment.... got to buy some SATA drive for it
- as soon as I baught a Drive for it it gets the same WinXP - Pro corp version

last one would be my old Laptop, which is jsut as bad, but for free so who cares, originally it was a Microstar notebook, which was pretty decent when we baught it... 4 years ago... it had some crappy choped down Windows XP home edition on it, nothing but demos and trial programs on it... even worse... all in german. It has been standing around for 3 years, cause my parents wouldnt let me get my hands on it and make it actually wireless internet capable (no internal card).... but I finally convinced them, so now its usable:

- Mobile Intel Pentium 4 2.80GHz CPU
- slow 512MB DDR Ram
- Mobile ATI Radeon 9700 Video card
- Linksys Wireless card (N-type)
- your standard DVD/CD drive

on top of that its heavy as hell, and for gaming completely useless, plus the battery is broken and doesnt last longer then 10-15 minutes, but as I said, I got it for free and it does its job (internet, office 2007 and such)

Any suggestions what I should switch or get for my main system?... the video card is with a year or so by videocard standards ancient, they dont even sell it anymore, even though back then it was the best one out there... I was thinking of getting dual 8800s, but the 512mb card does its job perfectly fine for now. there is maybe 2 or 3 games out there I cant play on high res.

Should get Vista. Direct X 10 is the ****!!! Anyways, if your mobo is capable of RAID, get a 2nd hard drive, and RAID 0 them. My RAID HD now copies files at 82MB/sec approx. Strange considering my backup drive (same kind - Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA only copies at 32MB/sec).

I'm not sure about ATI video cards, but I just saw an 8800GT at my local store with a memory bandwidth of 57GB/sec for $200 after a $40 rebate. I'm already running an EVGA 8800GT SSC with a bandwidth of 64GB/sec however.

My Q6600 system has some major problems with Crysis, but other than that, everything else runs smoothly.

What's your 3DMark 06 score? Mine tests at 13709 3DMarks in Vista (which always tests lower than XP)......and I haven't bothered to tune it yet.

RAID 0 has a "quicker" seek time, but dangerous. I would choose that one wisely. If your mirror is broken (One disk/drive goes bad), you're down for the count. There is no redundancy.Great proc, great mobo. DX10 is pretty amazing, but you really don't need it unless you're gaming or involved in design. Some new games require DX10. Also, SLI whatever you want to do isn't really necessary until you get into some serious gaming. At my office, no machines with Vista survive........I agree with the XP part. I'm still a big fan.

Raid 0 may be a bit dangerous.........so I bought Seagate drives. Supposed to be the most reliable drives in the industry.

Actually, Raptors are the most reliable...and you really cant beat raid-0'd raptors.

if you say so... here is some exterior shot... other then that I never thought of taking pictures of the inside of my PC

oh yeah, I gues I forgot the mouse and keyboard, if its of any use...

the keyboard is a rather old Microsoft Multimedia keyboard.... the newer ones are all worthless, and I havent found any other keyoards that are so comfortable to use compared to the price (since I get them for free, its hard to beat)
the mosue is a Lazer MX1000 Logitech... same thing... I game a bit and there is probably better mice out there, but I like this thing.

that pciture is somewhat older... when I feel like it I will Ill take some pictures of the system.... speaking of pictures, why cant I edit any of my older posts anymore?... I tried to update my sig page earlier and it wouldnt let me :S

heres a screenshot I took 5 minutes ago...

I'm a bit of a hardware junkie. Three desktop/towers.

A)Asus P5K Deluxe, Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz, 4GB ram, 2x1TB Hitachi hds, evga 8800GTS 640MB, Azentech x-plosion sound, sata Pioneer and Lite-on dvd writers. The Azentech in connected to an Onkyo 5.1 ch receiver and Infinity 5.1 HT speakers. 24" Dell 2407-HC display. Running Vista Home premium 64 and Fedora 8 via esata and an old37GB Raptor. Fun system.

2) Asus P5N-e SLI, Xeon [email protected], 2Gb ram, 74Gb raptor, 2x200Gb Seagate hds, bfg 7950 video, old Hercules Game theater XP sound, Klipsch 4.1 speakers, 2x ide dvd writers(Pioneer and Lite-on). Running XP Pro. Shares the 22" Mitsubishi Diamondtron via a kvm with the next system. Everyday machine.

C) Abit At8-32X, Opteron 170 @ 2.65Ghz, 2 Gig ram, 74 Gb raptor, 320Gb Seagate, 2 ide dvd writers(1 is my last Benq, sniff). Yamaha CRW-F1 cd writer. Onboard sound. Swan M200MKII speakers. Running XP Pro. Monitor shared with Xeon 3060 system via kvm switch. Burned a lot of discs on this machine.

The three computers, 11 speakers, and two sub woofers occupy a 12'x12' room (The Computer Lab) along with most of my network stuff. The kvm machines bracket a corner desk unit, and the other has the desk under the window..

4) Dell Inspiron 9100, 2 Gb ram, 9800 video, 3.2 P4. 60 Gb 7200 rpm hd. Dual booting XP Home and Fedora 8. Usually have this at work, but it does come home to visit.

Just upgraded the computer room switch to an HP 8 port Procurve. Nice switch. Next up I'll need to replace my basement switch that handles the rest of the house(Need at least 16 ports). One project at a time though.

I love how I can build a very capable midrange system now for ~$1000. I just built a system the other day for someone with a Q6600, 4gb ram, 8800gt 512mb, 160gb hd (plenty for him), plus case/psu/dvdrw, and a 22" samsung lcd. Totaled only $1017. A few years ago, $1017 would buy you an average system with no monitor. Awesome stuff.

Figured I dig this up and update it a little... over the last months I have increased my knowledge a bit and had some money to spare, so my hardware pile has greatly increased here... plus I moved out of my parents house and got an office now for all this junk :D

my main computer for pretty much everything:

- Antec 1200 Case (rediuculs cooling... but it was cheap and fits my video card)
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Dual-Core Processor (still the same but OC to 3.5GHz)
- ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Motherboard (replaced with the same one because I fried the original :D)
- Zahlman CNPS9700 (wouldnt fit in the old case :D)
- 850 Watt Corsair 850TX Power Supply
- MSI nVidia GeForce GTX285 (comes in this week)
- 6GB DDR2 Ram @ 800Mhz
- Dual DVD/CD burners (Lite-On & Phillips)... 3 if you count the virtual drive
- (Blueray player is coming in this week to remove the Lite-On)
- 1.5TB SATA internal HD space
- 420GB exteranal HD
- Windows Vista Ultimate (64Bit) (I hoped to skip Vista and go directly to Windows 7, but the RAM and the video card needs it :()
- 24" Widescreen ASUS 2ms HDMI LCD Monitor
- Logitech MX1000 Mouse
- Logitech G15 version 2 keayboard

next to it is my second system (dont quite know why but I have 3 computers infront of me), this one came together one by one by upgrading my main system... I pretty much got another system now, all it needs is a harddrive and a third monitor: (old stuff out the main system ended up in this one again...)

- Intel Pentium 4 3.00 GHz Single-Core Processor (old but still fast) (still true, the P4s were great)
- MSI 945G Platinum Motherboard
- 500 Watt Hipro Power Supply
- ATI Radeaon x1800 512MB Video card
- 2GB DDR2 Ram @ 667Mhz
- Some old CD drive and an even older DVD burner that works when it wants too
- 19" Samsung LCD screen
- 840GB SATA hard drive space
- Windows XP Professional (32bit) Coorperate Edit

I gave the Laptop away, but I picked up an old eMachine somewhere... dont know what im gonna do with that yet

I could mention my slightly overkilled sound system... for regular use I have a 200 Watt Logitech 2.1 system... pretty decent and enough to annoy the neighbors
over the years I picked up some more sound hard ware for hobby DJing purposes, which includes a 2500 Watt Behringer Amplifier and two Omnitronic PA System speakers, mixer, turntable and all that good stuff...

Ill add some pictures when everything is here and installed.

What kind of software are you running? Linux?
oh and no, that was Win XP with SP2, before SP3 came out I had StyleXP installed, which lets you mess with the interface.. not compatible with SP3 though, so not using that anymore
