I know some of you are Mac-o-philes, and I myself have been looking to buy a Mac. The new iMac released today at Macworld SF might be the one.

Sweet machine. This baby has it all... 800MHz G4, CDRW/DVDR Superdrive (high end models), 15" flat screen display etc etc....

Ermm...with Apples (even the iMac) all you have to do is swap in a new cpu board (I forget the technical term, but Apples don't use a traditional PC style motherboard) plop in more RAM and there you go.

I've been PC all my life, but even I can recognize that its too bad that PC makers don't have the cajones to develop innovative products that take full advantage of new and current technology, and deliver them for a fair price.

Name me a company that makes a PC with a 1.4+ghz (comparable to the G4 800 series) at least 256MBmb RAM, 60GB hard drive, 32MB nVidia DDR video card, a DVD-R and a CDRW drive, 15" flat screen display, firewire, etc etc etc computer for $1,800.

I am a regular at Pricewatch.com, and from my digging around you can't build a system like I stated above for $1,800.

Hmmm...

Could be a challenge though. I'll do more digging.

Well you got a couple of the parts wrong, and you are missing others.

Hold tight, I am making a list with links to the actual products.

Not really considering you haven't included a hard drive, keyboard, mouse, speakers, modem, network card, firewire, etc etc. I am comparing systems spec for spec, or as close to it as I can get.

Plus, unlike you and I, most people don't want to build the computer themselves, or hassle with shipping costs, scatty warranties etc.

My point is that there is no national OEM computer manufactuer who currently produces such a machine, and if they did it definatley would not be for this price or $1800. Can someone prove me wrong?

I'll agree that no national brand will have a lower price system, but they will have a comparable system at the price, and can be upgraded a lot easier if the need arises.

The biggest thing is that combo drive. I personally would hate to have a combo drive. One part breaks and you just lost your CD-ROM, DVD, CDRW capability. Plus the cost alone is unjustifiable.

Correction:

Dell offers a Dimension 8200 series that you can customize to come to damn near the same thing as the new iMac, or other Apples. Only problem is the price: $2,359

I agree with the upgradability to a point. As I mentioned earlier, you can swap out CPUs, HDDs, sound etc etc etc with Apples as well, but not too many people realize that.

And don't get me wrong, I like the looks of the new iMac and have nothing against Mac's, I just wouldn't get the top of the line one for $1800.....

I think the whole "you can upgrade it" debate is pretty pointless anyway. Most people keep their PC for a couple of years then buy a new one. The old one usually gets handed down to the kids or something.

The upgrade issue is really only important if you are buying a low spec machine, and you want to increase the spec gradually.

The people that build their own PC do so more for their own enjoyment than anything else.

Excellent points NC Brit. I agree 100%.

I suppose I should have cleard things up. I wouldn't go for the top of the line on either, and nor would I use it as my primary computing device. If I happened to get an Apple (which I intend to do) it is probably going to be a laptop of some sort. Probably an iBook, since that is what the wife wants.

Thanks Wutang.

That isn't a bad deal, but since I have the skill (I think) to build my own, I'm gonna go that route. :)

How do you like the computer you got? I've heard some good and some not so good things about Gateway.
