it sounds like a small fan running. it has to be the pump cause when i pull the back seat, its loudest right in the center of the car from under the car. so does a noisy pump mean it needs to be replaced? if so how much am i looking at? can i do it myself? i also noticed the loud noise is being picked up and amplified by my car audio system!!!! its just in the sub but i can still here it.

Disconnect your amp and subs, is the sound still there?
Step #2 in removing the pump is to REMOVE THE FUEL TANK. Still up for removing it? Let me know, and I'll give you the full removal process.

its noisier more times that othes. yes its still there with the amps off. but does it being noisy mean its going bad?
Well it could be a clogged fuel filter thats not helping send the fuel through the pump. IMO: I'd get the pump looked at if it's still noisy.

how much is a new fuel filter? so i have to have some special tools to replace it? thx for the info boss
Price? Not sure call or visit your local autozone or pep boys. give them your year, make and model, and they'll look it up for you. Special tools? Not really. But removing the fuel tank will be a real *****. There are 11 steps just removing that alone. E-mail me if you are 100% serious about changing the fuel filter out yourself, and I will be more than happy to send you the step by step directions via e-mail.

OK I know I am going to hear a bunch of bs for putting this up but here goes.Fill the tank and a 1 qt of tranny fluid to the tank to see if the noise gets quieter. We do this to cars going to the auction where I work. Most fuel pump problems are due to the tank being run too low during the warmer months. The fuel pump needs the fuel to keep it cool.Just like any electric motor, fuel pumps will go from time to time, but there are things we can do to prolong their life.Every time I change my oil I put a quart of tranny fluid in the tank and I have never had any type of fuel pump problems(including when my wife puts in the cheapest gas she can find).I use the tranny fluid trick on all of my vehicles,93 Trep 135,000;89 Bronco 129,000;88 Bronco 195,000;87 Maxima 140,000;another 87 Maxima 210,000.

I know it sounds unusual, but it is what I have done for years. There is a long story behind how I started doing it,so I won't get into that. The way I look at it is it really can't harm anything for anyone to try it.Our tanks hold somewhere in the neighborhood of 16-18 gallons,so if the tank is full when you do it the mixture is so thinned out it can't hurt anything. If you want to try it,try it.If not it really doesn't matter to me.Please don't think I am trying to get you to kill your car faster, because I am not like that.As I said,I do this to all my cars and never had any fuel system problems.Let us know how you make out.
