NYPD flexes muscle with new addition to car fleet
August 14, 2006, 4:16 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- The New York Police Department souped up its car fleet on Monday by adding a new version of a classic muscle car _ the 2006 Dodge Charger. Top speed: 150 mph.

The NYPD will test drive 15 new Chargers, including 10 with V-8 engines assigned to the highway unit, officials said. The remaining five will have V-6s and be used on regular patrol in the five boroughs.

If they pass inspection, they could replace hundreds of squad cars in the NYPD's 3,000-vehicle patrol fleet, now dominated by Ford Crown Victorias and Chevrolet Impalas.

"We're looking to diversify," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

In an analysis by Michigan State Police, Chargers equipped with V-8 engines had the quickest acceleration (6.52 seconds to 60 mph) and fastest lap time (150 mph) of any police vehicle tested.

The Charger appeared in 1966. Over the next several years, it made an impact on the stock car circuit and on television, starring as the General Lee, an orange 1969 model, in "The Dukes of Hazzard."

A Web site for the car's manufacturer, DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group, lists the civilian model's starting price at $22,995. Modified police models _ outfitted with fortified front seats, no rear-door handles and heftier brakes _ typically are sold to law enforcers at a discount.

Seems like a waste to me, in such a heavily populated area, yeah they can pickup quicker than probably a crown vic but with so many people I wouldn't want them doing chases in the streets at all let alone with a charger.

Now if we were talking about a post apocalyptic world where dangerous criminals ran from the police all the time then yeah I'd like to see them meet the need with faster cars and maybe even add turbo's.

Anyway diversity is kewl but replacing hundreds of cars with chargers is overkill. :battle:

When Philadelphia bought a bunch of chargers they were primarily patroling the surrounding highways. I would imagine New York would do something similar and not waste V8s on the narrow streets.

I think most people don’t realize that New York City consist of 5 boro's, The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island . Most only know of Manhattan as if that’s New York City. Its a tourist attraction, all the big name stores and stuff that’s were the crowds are at with the bumper to bumper traffic, and downtown Brooklyn. The rest of the city is just those bad neighborhoods like I live in where crime is high, and the good parts of the city we call two fare zones. The new chargers will only be used for quick response time, which for me is a good thing. Crime is up...BTW NYPD Highway patrol is only out at the end of the month, it’s a rear sight. You only see a lot when you drive to upstate N.Y., and upstate troopers drive crown vics...

i for one dont want my tax dollars wasted on mustangs, impalla ss, chargers, etc.

the crown vic is sufficient, they come up on ya plenty quick enough when the have reason. and really how many times have you heard " damn he outran me in my vic...but man if i had my charger i could have made that bust..." never happen...
they wont make a damn difference. its all about the radio...and the helicopters.

i was watching a nys tropper in a tahoo tailgating today a old lady just because he wanted her out of his way because she was in the fast lane. you couldnt have put a slice of bread in between the 2 cars. they dont need a more powerful vehicles, just like they dont need bigger guns..
i say give em YARIS's

we need is less cops on speed patrol giving people tickets for 80 in a 65. and more cops taking on street gangs and illegal imigrants and violent criminals.

What??? You still have a problem with street gangs up there in Buffalo?

I'm sure someone can do the numbers to show this, but my hunch is that the average person is more likely to get injured or die at the hands of someone doing 80 mph than a street gang member or an illegal immigrant.

well its not like there is gangs here like in the crip or blood sense, though im sure there are members here. but there is solid amount of violent crime in downtown buffalo on the west and east side, mind you i live in amherst

im not going to say the impact isnt worse when a higher speed collision occurs - cant argue with physics.
as for speeding....its people not paying attention kills you.
the morning commute people smoking a cig, talking on cell, and buttering their bagel in their suv is what i see killing more people. people turning in front of motorcycles while adjusting their radios etc.
but i suppose thats a conversation for another thread.
