Well guys, I shoulda lisened to the cold air intake nay Sayers, I bought and installed my j intake, I loved the looks, performance was noticeable (throttle response) and tones up the flowmaster nicely! But after a humid weekend the trep started runnin 5/8's and at half on the temp gauge, whereas before always at 3/8's at most, than today she crept up to 3/4... I've checked all connections, it's all air tight... I hate hot engines so I took it off, put the stock system back on, runs nice and cool. So has anybody expierenced this? I've even widened the air flow hole in the fender to try help, no good. So short of pulling a fog light and runnin a duct, or cutting a hole in the hood, I think I'm s.o.l. I loved the gains of the cold air, but looks as tho I may have to get a factory k&n, and keep it stock... I got the lenses smoked, and the 300 m interior is sickly!!!!! Thanks for the help fellas, maybe you guys have some ideas on getting my cold air operationable? Pull thermostat? Ideas? image.jpg

Looks awesome!

I never noticed any issues. In fact, I should more so than anyone else as I only have a cone filter stuck on the end of my "crinkle" hose. It's only a few inches from the exhaust manifold. But I like the throatier sound and response.

I recommend relocating the battery to the trunk, cutting out the battery box and putting the filter down in there where it can pick up all the air running in through the bumper. This is my end-project goal for the filter and eventually room for charge pipes for a turbo setup.

enjoy getting cooked in the summer and frozen in the winter. I almost prefer the seats in my intrepid due to that.
Actually, having leather seats in a few vehicles... I find the 300 ones actually less problematic this way. My Dodge Ram WAS HORRIBLE for the burns and freezes.

If the intake charge is overheated......the engine will too.

I understand that, but he is using a J-intake which is used in several other vehicles with no problem. No way it would double the intake temps. There has to be another limiting factor. Maybe an air leak past the J-intake heat shield from not proper install where it would be sucking in from above the manifold would make sense to me.

A decent scan tool would be able to monitor the intake air temperature. Perhaps you should start there to verify it?

And putting the stock air box back on brought the temperatures back to where they should be. You figure it out.

I did bleed a lil air outa the coolant system today, maybe this weekend I'll try the intake again, may also be time for a thermostat... But with the stock air box it is staying cool? we've had a crazy change in weather lately maybe the ol girl is just having trouble adjusting lol, my papa was the previous owner, waterpump was done twice, so I'm thinkin thermostat, rad hoses, slap the intake on and hope for the best!

Unless the J intake is sucking air right off the Cats I don't see how aftermarket intake did anything. Chances are good just the conditions were right, or your foot was in it more because of the intake and you didn't realize it.

FWIW My airbox is stock with the exception of a larger opening on the bottom. Even on HOT days engine idling I have never seen nothing over 130 degree temps in my intake. And even with that a quick drop once moving or even just revving up a nudge. (I use a ice warmer that has a outside thermo probe I stuck to the inside of the Intake right at the beginning of the Throttle body on the inside.) Hotter air will combust more efficiently, and cleaner where as colder air is more dense and will create more power due to increase air/fuel density. But unless the air intake temp is near or above the actually engine temp I don't see it effecting overall coolant temp.


Also, area such as this you need to pay more attention to what is going on. Pick a day with a steady temp throughout the usage of the car. Drive first stock. Plan a route. Stop/go highway, w/e. Then swap out intakes and repeat the exact same route and conditions. Rather it be with a/c on or how you drive the vehicle rather you stop alot of drive at slow speeds. This is the ONLY way to truely test or determine what cause/effect your intake is/is not having on your coolant temp.

whenever my trep has overheated in any way it was one of these few causes...
1. fan or fans not working
2. radiator leaking and air in system and lower coolant level(this was usually easy to spot with the thermometer gauge bouncing up and down)
3. bad thermostat
4. bad hose(usually lower which is a pain to get to and might as well do thermostat while in there)
5. bad head gasket
