Disclaimer - This will not be an all out top of the line rebuild, I just dont have that kind of funding. However I am putting as many upgraded components into this thing as I possibly can.

With that info in mind, the car has been towed back to my place. As soon as I get some spare time, its going in the garage for teardown. I plan on pulling the transmission then pushing the car back outside so I have more room to work. There is no need for the car to be inside the whole time. I just have to make sure to plug all the holes and such to keep the local wildlife out of my car. I ordered the ATSG (automatic transmission service group) rebuild manual online and it should be here by the end of the week. I found a few 2.7L transmissions locally for under $100 so I may pickup one of those to snag the gear set, torque converter, and any parts that are broken in mine.

Does anyone know if the second gen internals work inside a first gen case? I seem to remember that second gens have upgraded hard parts. If I'm buying a whole trans for parts I might as well use them.

man i wish i was mechanically inclined to do stuff like this. *looking to left and right to make sure nobody will see me cry*

where did i go wrong?

seriously keep us posted. it would be nice to see some beefier treps.

Buying the revised parts for a first gen tranny upgrades it to 2nd gen spec in terms of performance and durability.

I don't know if the 2nd gen parts will physically fit but I think they would.

The problem is that I know I wont be able to afford all new upgrade parts, they are just too expensive and there are too many of them. Acctually the dealer has no idea which are upgraded and which are still the same so I would end up replacing things that dont need to be. I'm almost positive that I'm going to get one of those 2nd gen transmissions to tear apart and take a look at. if it fits, I'll go for it. Then I wont have to do the case mod, it will all bolt right up. Except the flex plate, that still needs modding.

Every time I have something to update, I'll post. Its not going to be done this weekend or anything but I need my car back so I'm expecting about two weeks for this rebuild. Oh and there will be pics! Soooo many pics.... Muhahaha!!

btw, I found a complete 2000 Prowler parts manual, but its pdf so idk where to upload it. If you know of a site, I'd be glad to post it on the boards for everyone.

Last one I got was $20 from the local trans shop. I also found one online for $120(approx) which looks just like the transgo one but more parts. idk if I'll spring for that one. I'll try to find it again and do a little more research.

Here's the latest... I read through allpar and found they recommend replacing the front and rear carriers, overdrive hub, and the 2-4 hub. So I stopped by the dealer today and got prices for those plus the filter and current price of atf4.

Front Carrier - 5014201AA - $212.00
Rear Carrier - 4567539AB - $137.79
Overdrive Hub - 4864936 - $92.61
2-4 Hub - 4569618AB - $96.84
Filter Pkg - 4796730AB - $16.72
ATF4 oil - 5013457AA - $7.50

So now that I know I can only afford maybe one of those, It's basically 100% that I'll be getting a 2.7L trans for parts. I'll be looking for the newest one I can get. I also tried to find this other trans parts place but they arent where the map said they are, so I'll call them later and get prices on the Raybestos parts.

besides, how do you think they make performance transmissions? Yup, modify the stock ones.

I talked to a friend and he said that the older model intrepids transmissions are "glass" trannies. Run them to hard and they will break, making them not ideal trannies or cars for performance.

and that's why I'm not using an older model transmission. I am using the latest and greatest factory parts in my slightly older case. So I have the strongest parts in a bolt up case. The early a606's were just a604's turned sideways, as time progressed they changed certain parts and evolved the transmission into something fairly decent. I am doing this project to see what can be done to upgrade this transmission on a modest budget. I already have a few ideas for someone with a bigger budget but for now this will do. Once this is ready to go I will resume my usual beating and see how long it lasts. Perhaps finally getting that boost I've been chasing for the last few years.

I'm using the case and a few other parts from my 1996 3.3L. The other hard parts are coming from a 2000+ 2.7L, which has a higher stall torque converter, better transfer gear ratio, and being the newest version has all the best parts. Anything replacable (gaskets, seals, clutches) will be raybestos or mopar.

btw, the '93 and '94 transmissions are the ones you need to stay away from (performance wise). They are the very first in the series, they even have an a604 valve body.

edit - speaking of ideas for those with more money... There is an off chance that a chrysler 12 bolt ring gear will bolt into the a606, however the chances of the pinion working too is slim to nil, hence the more money. supposing the transfer gear ratio is basically 1:1 then a std 4:10 gear set in the diff would work the same as it would in a rwd application. The real question is if anything else from the 12 bolt axle will work.

If theres nothing wrong with it then I wouldnt rebuild it. Mine died so I dont have a choice. If your really interested I recommend getting this ATSG manual and reading over it a few times. If you are at all uncomfortable with the process then dont do it. There are a lot of sensitive parts in there so unless you have some mechanical background its probably not a good idea. However getting a spare trans from the junkyard to tear apart for fun would give you an idea of whats involved.

Well I wanna start putting performance parts on my intrepid, but my transmission can't handle it. So I'm needing to rebuild it. Or get a transmission from a different car and put it in it.
