Does anyone else feel my frustration at DC with the plastic garbage they built our first gen. Intrepids?

Have anyone of your headlights gone out and the thin, brittle plastic that holds the screws just crack when you remove the screws?
Now my drivers side headlight jiggles at highway speeds, well until I put some oil in the engine and left the cap on the headlight and it became wedged between that and the hood. That was actually kinda cool, I popped the hood to figure out why it wasn't jiggling and noticed the cap, that's a lot cheaper than a $60-80 headlight assembly!

Having problems removing the screws to get to your air filter? The cheap plastic just cracks, on one of them; then the other strips out the plastic.
Drill out the screws and rig it, now you need a screw driver and an open end wrench just to get to your air filter!

Has your high beam switch went out?
This is actually kinda interesting. I'll make the story short though. My headlights would not work because the switch thought the high beams were on. I took the steering column cover off, and removed the "assembly" that houses the wiper/turn signal arm, hazard switch, and high beam switch. I has 4 screws holding it together. I disassembled that and found two boxes, one was the high beam switch. It was burnt up from over heating. I went to the dealership to purchase the high beam switch, well. It is not a serviceable part, you need to purchase the whole assembly for $150! If a moron (me) can take it apart and figure it out then why? Why do you have to purchase the whole assembly when the one bad part that slips right out and can be replaced no problem not be purchased separately?
Well, I currently do not have the ability to turn on my high beams, but at least my headlights work without spending $150!!

How do the black things between your rear door window and back window look?
Cracked and their pretty gloss coat is peeling off. That's gonna cost you between $100-150!


I understand things wear out in time but man! Couldn't they have thought about how cheap the plastic that they used is?

Then next time a car pulls out in front of me I'm hitting the wrong petal!! I'm not going to pay over a hundred dollars for cheap parts that should last more than 5 years or the 60,000 miles when they broke. The headlight assembly should be built to last for the life of the vehicle, or have easily replaceable parts!

I love my car and even though I am upset with DC, would not give it up for another. It's just annoying!!

how about...the aztek, avalanche,gtp,taurus...etc plus the fantastic fiberglass cars too. BTW welcome to the boards.

How many first-generation cars, engineered and built in 1993, had better-quality plastic stuff in them? Not many, to be sure.

The LH sedan was all-new in 1993. Yes it was based off of an existing platform, but many parts of it were totally new at the time.

There are bound to be issues like that.

Was the first-generation Camry perfect? Was the first-generation Accord or Civic perfect? Hardly.

It's not an excuse, it's a fact.

Let's not forget that the Intrepid/Concorde/Vision, in 1993, were on-par with other sedans in it's class in terms of build quality and fit/finish.

I don't want to complain too much, 'cause I really love my Trep. But I can't help not being annoyed with those shrinking weaterstrips and exterior rubber "joints" at the base of the windows. Those cars are well designed and assembled in a pretty decent manner, but I can't help but think that many of the components are on the cheap side. You still get a lot of car for the money though. And it's a lot cheaper than a Mercedes. :wink:

AGREED! when i bought the car the headlights were yellow and hazey. so i bought a new set and changing them took hours of searching for the right tools and sizes of screws because the original "screws" were stripped and i basically had to saw the old headlights out before i could get the screws out--and now my new headlights have already had the heat shields on both sides melt off (they rattle around freely inside the unit, hopefully they dont smack into my bulbs) and one is full of condensation-i dont even want to think about replacing them again--so hence my agreement

Just to add to the things that look like **** after a while....the passenger airbag cover. Most of the 1st gens, i see, that thing is warped to ****! But I guess it being in the sun over the years will do that.

The thing I'm mad about my second gen. (among other things) is the black trim pieces around the glass and doors. Faded after 2 years, now it looks like they're starting to warp!
