I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid that has 140k miles. It is running fine now that I finally got the oil leak in the front lower end of the engine corrected. Turns out it was a cracked oil pump cover. Now, I have an annoying popping sound that occurs when I turn the wheel to the left or right after leaving a parked position, either going forward or in reverse. I started noticing the sound after I replaced my struts on the front and back. I also had some of the suspension replaced like the rocker arm and the stablizer bar as well. I put it in the shop but the shop owner couldn't locate the sound cause it is difficult to find it when you are in the car and driving it and not close to the wheel where the sound is coming from.

Anyone out there has any ideas? I thought it might be a bad boot on the strut but the shop owner swore that this is not the problem. Only next step I can take is to take back to the shyster dealership shops.

Mine does the same thing, but it only happens when I turn left. My car doesn't even have to be moving. Even when parked, I can turn the wheel to the left and get it to pop. I've gotten someone to turn the wheel while I listened and could never pinpoint the location of the sound.

Most of the front-end has been replaced other than the upper strut assembly and the rack. My feeling is that my popping sound is coming from the rack.

Mine does the exact same thing. I notice it when I pull out of a parking space or turn from a stop. It doesn't matter what way I turn the wheel, it still does it. My mom (gave me the car) says that it made that sound the day it came home from the dealership. I would really like to know what it is because sometimes it can be really loud. Hope someone on has a explanation for the noise.

It's most likely the inner tie rod bushing that's shot. Instead of having the bushing fill up the space between the bolt holding the tie rod and the tie rod, now there's a gap. So when you make the wide turn, the play in the tie rod causes a poping sound. This is a really common problem that comes with age. A replacement set of bushings (you don't need to replace the tie rod itself) will cost you < 15 bucks (get the TWO-PIECE MOOG Poly blue colored bushing).

Installation will take a while cuz you need to remove the windsheild wiper, cowl grill, strut brace, intake resonators (all of it before the throttle). Turn the wheel ALL the way to the passenger side. Then you can very easily access the bolts holding the tie rods. Do not remove the bolts from both tierods at the same time!!! Loosen both bolts but ONLY remove the side you are working on!!! To make the job really easy, remove the outter tie rod from the strut so that you can take the entire tie rod out to get the bushing out.

thats wrong, i just did my inners and the only thing i had to take off was the intake, turn the wheel all the way to the passenger side and its alot easier to reach.

My inner tierod bushings were replaced last winter. My car doesn't wander at all when driving. No play in the steering. Just an annoying pop.

I had a very annoying noise a while back and it was my steering arm, the tie rod was put on wrong, the wheel wasnt straight, it wet away tho. after awhile, get it just wore off.

my wife just started to complain about a poping noise coming from the front end when she first pulls out of the garage in the morning. she's at 100,000 miles now and im figuring that if i am going to dismantle the inner tie rods than i may as well replace them along with the outers and bushings so that i will avoid a problem in the not to distant future. i had a outer bushing snap apart on my escort at 135000 miles while driving about 35mph. not too fun.

lol when i was driving once awhile back in january, my Right Front CV joint snapped off the axle, now that. wasnt fun.

I find it hard to believe an inner would be shot from the showroom floor (assuming Mom bought it new).
I would guess the rack slipping side to side in the mount bushings.
It's well known these cars put tremendous stress in this area.
Mine does it occasionally, and I know it's the rack sliding. I can seen a 1/4" "clean spot" past the bushing edge.

seems like the general consensus is the tie rod ends. my actual instinct says "have the cv joints checked." my father had a similar problem with his car.
