If your car's power steering pump is sounding reminiscent of your mom's old Ford Taurus, it's time to replace that worn out and contaminated power steering fluid.

Take a look at your fluid in the reservoir. Is it yellow/gray and murky? New fluid is crystal clear. The following procedure is what my mechanic told me he would going to do. It's very easy.

Cost: about $7.00
Time: 45 minutes

Tools and supplies:

- 2 quarts High Quality Power Steering fluid - I used Valvoline SynPower Synthetic blend, available at Autozone for $3.50/qt
(don't be tempted to use that 10 year old crap sitting in your garage)

- Pliers

- a few 12 once coffee cups (or equivalent to catch the old fluid)

- plastic container to collect the fluid for return to a recycle


1. Compress the clamp (or loosen the hose clamp) on the return line at the bottom of the fluid reservoir. Slide the clamp away from the edge of the hose

2. Get a coffee cup underneath the hose connection to collect the fluid. Stick some rags under the car in case some fluid spills out

3. Pull off the hose from the reservoir. Let the fluid drain into the cup (about 10-12 ounces will drain). Removing the fill cap will speed the flow. My fluid was merky and thick. slow flow.

4. Once the tank is empty replace the line, remove the cup and pour fluid into a larger container for recycling

5. Refill the tank with new fluid.

6. Start the engine, turn the wheel all the way left and right a few times to mix in the new fluid. This only takes about 30 seconds

7. Stop engine and repeat the drain process about 5 or 6 times. You will notice the fluid clearing out. The new fluid appears finer and drains out more quickly and smoothly

8. Return the hose clamp to secure the hose on the reservoir and add fluid. Run the car moving the steering around a few times then fill fluid to the fill line.

Within 5-10 miles of driving, your steering pump should sound like new.

Take the old fluid to a service station or a Pep Boys for recycling

Note - I dont recommend starting the car with the fluid drained to push out more fluid. I did it and the steering screamed. Probably not wise.

Also, I have a 2.7 litre. Pump is very accessible. May be a more difficult job on other engines.

this is a good idea.. considering most of us NEVER think about these fluids.... maybe I will give that a try :)

so true, how many people have flushed there tranny, the 2nd gen 2.7 with the oil, i never thought about the power sterring fluid.
