don't speed and you don't need one. really. i have one that i got as a gift and use. the only time they are effective is if the cop is scanning other cars way up ahead and gives you some time to slow down. if the cop is right on you and flips their radar on, you are toast with or without a detector. just do the speed limit. easier said than done at times, but what the real point of speeding.....

I've always wanted a radar detector but I've been afraid it would curse me since I've never had a ticket *knock on wood*

I think that's a lot for one but it looks like its a good one. I wouldn't want to spend more then $100 for a really nice one. Any recommendations?? :D

Helen, you know I'm a big fan of Cobra. You can get one almost like mine (an earlier model) it's 100 from cobra but I'm sure you can go on ebay and get one much cheaper like I did ;-)

$99

$129

$139

But of course this is the one I'm running with and have yet to have a speeding ticket :)

Best radar detectors are free, and we've all had them all of our lives.

Eyes.

The best detection device I can think of. Didn't see it till the last second? Well, the radar detector will only cue you when it is the last second! :p

Knowing where your local police like to hide out and set up speed traps is also good :blunt:

Thanks Fernando and Milkman. Quick question... Do all radars plug into the cigarette lighter? I messed up a wire or something doing my gauge mod and have no power to it, not a priority on the repair list either.

Thanks!

I think there used to be some that used batteries, but would you want to change batteries every few days or have a dieing battery and get caught with your pants down while speeding? If anything and you feel froggy, all of your interior lights have a constant on power wire and you can use a ground wire from somewhere else. :eek6:

I've had my Bel for about 7 years now. Looks very similar to the one you linked to, but it was around $300 back then. Believe me, it has paid itself off numerous times!

The only problem I had with it is from pushing the button between bright and dark so many times, all of the buttons kind of purged and dropped down within the casing and no longer work. But it still does the job!

I got a V1 for Christmas. Man, it is damn good. I really don't go much over the speed limit though. I hardly go over in the city but, usually on long distance trips I stay in 7-9 mph over the speed limit. But, it's amazing. If you have the moolah get a V1 it's def. worth the cash.

Radar

At the risk of starting a "mine is better than yours" debate I own a Valentine One. Unsurpassed laser range, huge range on all other bands. It has saved me on laser already as well as Ka. It's expensive at $399, but what is a ticket and the commensurate raise of your insurance worth? If you think you drive fast enough where speeding might cost you money, get the best you possibly can afford. The top three detectors as far as range and sensitivity are: Valentine 1, Escort 8500 X50, and the Bel RX-65. Bel and Escort are the same company, the two detectors mentioned are virtually the same internally but each have unique features. I have tried all three (they all have 30-day return guarantees-more than enough for evaluation purposes), and chose the Valentine One.

I didn't see a Province/State Listed for you so here's a few things you might consider as well:
-what type of radar is used in my driving area? (X, K, Ka, Laser)
-is any of it instant on or is it all constant on?
-are radar detectors legal in my Province/State? Where RDs are illegal, quite often RDD (radar detector detectors) are employed.

There are other things to consider as well, so go to this website- radardetector.net . They have the most comprehensive knowledge base that is generally accurate. You will find fans and detractors of all brands. So go to this particular link first http://www.radardetector.net/NEW-USERS...please-read-this-before-posting-15422t.php
it will answer the basic questions first and is very informative. If you are considering a Cobra, read that forum especially to see what most people think of them. Oh, and don't get the ones that run on batteries, they don't constantly scan for radar in order to conserve battery power.

As stated in above posts, your eyes help as well, remember that a detector is a driving aid. And they CAN alert you before the last second if you have chosen correctly. I drive approximately 100,000 km a year, and it has definitely been worth every penny. Matter of fact, it would be worth it at twice the price, but that's just my opinion.

Happy Driving,

I have the PNI Steel Eye, I got it at Costco for about 80.00, not bad for the price, and it is battery powered.

Here is a link showing how it rated.

Steel Eye

I like it, and it does it's job, but as most state here, it is best not to speed, and use your eyes.

One more thing...if your Province/State does use Ka-band radar, find out which frequencies they use. There are three- 33.8, 34.7, and 35.5. Then look up test results for whatever detectors you decide to compare on all bands and frequencies (X, K, Ka, Laser). Radar Roy has tests on his website, but he also sells RDs as well, so keep that in mind. For a totally unbiased set of reviews, look up Guys Of Lidar. Just a group of guys with no hidden agenda, but fair test results.

Waste of money. You always get what you pay for in a radar detector. I got a speeding ticket for going 11mph over (bullshit), so I did some research and bought the Escort Passport 8500 X50 (blue) ($345+tax at Best Buy) a few days later.

Yes. Buy a more expensive one. Anything that cheap is as good as a door stop.

Escort makes a nice one that runs on either AAA or AA batts.

V1 looks like it came straight out of 1987. They seriously need to update their look. Also, they use to be rated the highest in tests, now they're like #2-3 in the tests.

Hope your antenna's in a good place or it ain't doin ****. I have mine mounted direclty in the middle of my windshield. If you try and hide it, you usually end up blocking the antennas ability to pick up scatter or see through the window of the big SUV in front of you.

Both of these statements are far from the truth. I'll explain:
On superbowl sunday, I was on the freeway and it started going nuts. I was like, WTF? I slowed down, and about 30 seconds later, I went over a hill and saw some lights in the distance. The radar detector found the pork before I did. Also, What good are your eyes if the pork is hiding, like behind an underpass? A good radar detector picks up radar scatter bouncing off cars from far as heck away.

The reason why I went with the Escort Passport 8500 X50 is becuase it supposedly offers the best laser protection, and it is always in the top 3, along with the Beltronics Vector 965/995 (995 just has more options), and the Valentine 1. Some state pigs in IL have lasers now. I actually got hit by one on the freeway a few weeks back and was able to slow down in time. (I was doin about 30 over, too :2up: ) Any of ^those 3 are awesome.

I dont remeber what brand i had, it was taken out of the car, but the only thing i liked about it was the "sexy womens" voice :p
When I turned the car on she would say
"Checking System...."
and in this (i want you voice) she would say
"Systems Ready"
I named her Veronica....
