My car is a 1995 Intrepid ES 3.5l. It's been running pretty well since I got it, but it has recently been having some major issues (overheating, mostly). I haven't found any major coolant leaks on the outside, so I went to check the spark plugs to see if any coolant is getting into the cylinders, and I found oil on #1. And when I say I found oil, I mean the spark plug was covered in oil. Has anyone else here had this issue, and what could be causing this?

Sounds like the seal on the sparkplug tube is leaking. People have found that before when checking plugs to find the cause of a misfire. Typically ends up with someone trying to replace the seal, pulling on the tube with pliers, damaging the tube, and ordering a replacement tube & seal.

Right, that makes me feel a little better. Honestly, I've been planning a refresh on the top end anyway, so I'll make sure to look at that in the process.

water pump impeller fins worn down or missing is a common failure item issue on these type of design of pumps,. once yuou remove it you can see if the fins are missing damaged etc, which causes lack of flow and impedation flow of coolant in system at idle ande speed, both, at all times really. . Also if the cooling fan motors are not kicking on.. failing rely(s) try swapping relays with other ones that are known good, or jump 30 and 87 pins at cooling fan motor relay socket pins in the relays center box, under the hood driver side, to see if the fan motors run good,

also lower hose at higher RPM may be collpasing sucking shut impeding flow. if you are having cooling issue sonly at speepd, under higher RPM maybe?


water pump fins and failure is most common issue cause of overheating without any other explanation however. and is a known issue on these engines cars specifically,. and 90% of them are cheap low cost and easy to replace, are in a pretty easy location to access and replace,. did my 93 3.3L one in wayyy less than an hour. the little screws retaiing the pump to the timing cover is the worst thing about it totally. otherwise is total cake easy job,. trhw screws are vert small and like to corrode and snap off. i lost one and never replaced it just used alot of gasket make where the broken bolt is and it was perfectly fine for at least a couple years, after i replaced the pump on it,. but i would warm the houising up where threades of the screws are in it and tap on housing where same threades are, and try to get them to come loose and not twist off on you, in the housing. or at least not more than one of them. will be fine if just only one does twist off in the housing. one of mine a second oen i ended up nut and bolt it, all way throguh the housing. also been working great fine no issues at all, the factory screw heads are 10mm head and are very small diameter bolts. use removable thread locker on screws threads when reassembling reinstalling the pump bolts,. and new bolts, stronger ones. at least 8.8 or 8.9 hardness ones,. or grade 5.
mininum strength/grade anyways. i wouldnt go with Ss ones they are strong but not as strong as id want to trust on these, about same as the original really IMHO. i have snaped off SS ones in the past,.,.

looks like about 16 hours of work to me but I take over an hour to adjust 8 valves
damn interference motors
radiator has to come out and half of the front end, headlights and all, just to get a timing belt
my malibu, id have done before lunch
you can try taking out the thermostat and change your oil filter at the same time
enough fun right there

the nice thing about dodge is you overheat - fill it up with a couple of gallons of water
and back on your way with that
