Hey, I've got a pretty bad oil leak going on. Jacked up the car today and it appears to be behind the oil pan, next to the transmission. Had a guy check it out, and he says it's most likely the rear main seal. I was told it would be a 6.5 hour job, involving a removal of the transmission to get at. From a quick search of the forums, that sounds pretty consistent.

My question is, how long is it safe to run the car in this condition if I keep on top of the oil level? I need to call some places for some estimates, but I'm thinking it's going to be several hundreds to fix. In addition to that, I still need some other costly repairs done (tie rods/bushings and sway bar link). I just won't be able to afford it at this time.

I would assume that if I keep the oil at a decent level, it should be fine, but you guys are the experts here.

Yep - just check the oil regularly (weekly?) and keep it at a proper level (don't fall to temptation and slightly overfill since you're expecting to lose some).

Won't hurt anything except the environment. :D
