I just finished the J18 recall service on my '03 ES and soon as I left the dealership the light came back on :twak:

Took it to get checked and it said codes 0700 and 1776. I'm thinking I need to flush the trans fluid w/ new filter, get new cam & crank sensors, new solenoid pack....but this is all from research. Has you resolved this prob and how much did it cost?

What was the recall service for?

I'm going to say that there's a good chance it's Solenoid Pack replacement on this one. Went thru the same thing last year on my 2002 Special. Around $800 at the dealer for parts/labor/fluid change.

j18 Recall:

"THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ON VEHICLES MAY BECOME DAMAGED FROM CONTINUED OPERATION IN LIMP IN MODE FOLLOWING A CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAULT. THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) MUST BE REPROGRAMMED (FLASHED) TO PREVENT POTENTIAL ( NHTSA ITEM NUMBER - 10032556 )"

I just had it flashed today and I'm wondering if just replacing the sensor will do. But I'm getting paranoid because the Cats may have already gone bad. I don't know how to tell.

Out here in California, Intrepids can not pass emissions testing if it pulls a p1776. So! I went researching on the net (my manual doesn't even have the p1776 code in it!) and found this:
TSB 21-008-04 and the revision for it dated 2004!!! whyyy in 2010 people are still not getting this issue properly resolved is beyond me. But please can someone verify that it is legitimate?
justanswer.com/uploads/dodgetech2875/2010-01-19_003826_trans_codes.pdf

and if you are an admin please post this where people are also encountering the issue. It is very common and people are being told everywhere to rebuild their entire transmission, when it may not be necessary

DISCUSSION:
If the vehicle operator describes a MIL illumination and the technician finds DTC P1776
Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in LR Position is set the DRBIII® can be used to access
the event data screen and look at the “TRS Code” reading.
NOTE: The solenoid switch valve is not in the solenoid pack it is in the valve body.
TRS Code Reads TR2
If the “TRS Code” displays “TR2” it is an indication that the manual valve was not fully in
the OD position at the time the DTC was set. Check the shifter cable adjustment and
adjust if necessary. Also check the shift control system for excessive friction and/or routing
issues.
TRS Code Reads OD
If the “TRS Code” displays “OD” then a sticky solenoid switch valve is the primary cause.
Perform the proper diagnosis for the valve body. Inspect for foreign material in the solenoid
switch valve and plugs.
**FOR 2002 - 2004 LH MODEL ONLY**
**If replacing the valve body assembly for DTC P1776 Solenoid Switch Valve Latched in
LR Position first inspect the build date on the solenoid pack (Fig. 1) or (Fig. 2). If the build
date range falls in between 3001 and 0603 replace the solenoid pack not the valve body**.

NOTE: The first three characters are the day of the year, the fourth character is the
year, ie. 3001 is the 300th day of 2001.

Valvebody/solenoid pack failure is an extremely common problem in the 02-04 model years. I also had to have a valve body replaced in my car (about$850 at dealer with a fluid and filter change as well). I definitely recommend that anyone with trans problems on these cars goes to a dealer to get a proper diagnosis. Most trans shops cannot properly diagnose transmission problems on these cars and will recommend a rebuild for not only this problem but also the even more common sensor issues. While a rebuild will certainly fix the problem it will also cost far more than the proper repair will.
