It turns out my computer is bad in my '99.

How critical is to operation that I reprogram its junkyard replacement with my car's VIN and mileage?

Is that something that I could do with a fairly cheaply accessible scan tool (that I either buy or rent)?

The one I found says the firmware is updated to 98 but mine is a 99 and I have a sticker under the hood that says it was updated even beyond that. Is that something I could do while I have the tool or is it a dealer only thing (and if the latter how much does it usually run)?

Also, can I use a newer one up to the end of the SBEC IIIs?

for example, here in my local junkyard is an 01 with attached sticker on it. The cross reference data doesn't say its compatible.

What are the chances of that being actually true?

What about if I took it to someone who could upgrade its firmware such that it had the latest for my '99? Is the computer physically different (e.g. pinouts changed)?

Anyone here have any working knowledge of this?

Realistically you'll only be able to use up to a 2000 PCM. 2001 had different wiring for at least one sensor going to the PCM.

Looking at the part numbers you're showing...I'm assuming you have a California car? The programming is different for Emissions.

If you were to get a 2000 PCM with California Emissions it would be Part # 04606614AF

@Ronbo do you think any California 1998-2000 would work?

Or are you trying to say the programming is different between those years for emissions?

Any programming on the PCM will require a DRB III. Either the dealer or an independent shop that might have one.

The mileage shown on the display is stored in the BCM. Unless you think you will run into issues with emissions testing, I would be more concerned as to whether or not the replacement ECM comes from a vehicle that had the sentry key immobilizer. You can tell by whether or not the other vehicle has a black (non-chipped) or gray (chipped key). If both vehicles are non-chipped, it's a direct swap. If yours currently has a chipped key and the other one is non-chipped then you can either disconnect the skim module on your car and not be required to have chipped keys or leave it connected and the ECM from the non-chipped key vehicle will automatically program itself to require the same chipped key that your vehicle currently takes. If BOTH vehicles take chipped keys, then you will need the chipped keys, ECM, and skim module from the other vehicle (the chipped key from the other vehicle would have to be attached near the ignition cylinder so that the skim module can read the chip while your old key is in the ignition cylinder). Or you could have new chipped keys cut and program them to the new ECM.

Are you actually in Kalifornia with Emissions testing? If so then getting a PCM with Kalifornia Emissions programming is a must. Before they start the test they'll verify the PCM is correct and matches the VIN. Otherwise it'll be a fail. You've got a 2.7 so your engine code is EER. I already gave you the 2000 EER California Emissions PCM part number.

Mine is a NON-chipped key. I've ordered a PCM from a Junkyard on the other end of the state.

What if the one I've ordered is from a chipped key car?

How common were the chipped key cars in '99? (My understanding is this PCM is a '99 only part)

yes, sadly I'm in Kalifornia (and will be unable to leave for at least a few months).

The ECM I've ordered has the exact same part number as mine (so I'm assuming it will have the Kalifornia emissions programming).

So they smog shop will verify the VINs match even in some of the lesser restrictive counties (I'm in Butte)?

The engine code "EER." Where should I look for that and why would I need to know it?

Fortunately I found a '99 ECM with the same part number as my old one (without even the need to return the core so I'll have an extra to tinker with). I think it's a pretty common thing for the open collector drivers to blow out on these things (I've had another Trep with the NGC where an injector driver blew). Maybe I can figure out how to go in and change them (however my NGC was all potted in silicone which made it a PITA to get the board clean enough to actually work on it).

Not sure how common they were in 99. I know my 2000 ES had the gray chipped keys. If the car the new ecm came from has chipped keys then your car will start and run for about 2 seconds and die, after 5 attempts the ecm will lock itself out and won't attempt to crank at all.

A) how will I know if it came from a chipped key car (other than it not starting, cuz I've done a lot of work and I've never even run this car so I'd be really surprised if it starts right away anyway); and

B) how would I neuter the new PCM from being for a chipped car?

If CAN means CAN bus, our cars are *not* CAN.

ha, I got the PCM in the mail. Same number. Came already SKIM violation disabled :\ PCM might be good but now I have to find someone to reflash it with a non-SKIM ROM.
