I have a problem that has just developed. When I have my wipers on in the delay mode, the wipers stop at the top of there stroke, instead of returning to the bottom of the windshield. It's like the thing has the "park" location screwed up. This only happens in intermittent mode.

On the first swipe, they come up, and stop. Once the delay period is over (which is longer now than it used to be), it swipes down, and then back up and stops at the top again.

If I have the wipers on regular mode and turn the wipers off on the up-stroke, they do return to their proper parked position, but only after a few stutters in the location they stop at during intermittent mode. If I turn them to off on the down-stroke, they stop as they should at the bottom of the windshield.

Where is the delay unit for the wipers, and has anybody ever had this problem before? Any ideas where to look for a fix? Is there a "park" sensor somewhere in the motor unit, or somewhere else that may be sensing the blade position incorrectly? Would REALLY like to get this fixed...

I'm not sure that's the problem. I'm thinking it has something to do with the park switch. It has been very intermittent lately. Sometimes they work fine, other times they screw up. Low and High speeds work fine, it's just during intermittent, and during the "park" sequence when you turn off the wipers.
Lately, it has also been stopping at the top of the windshield even after I turn them off. It acts like it thinks that "up" is where "park" is located. If it stops at the top of the windshield, I can generally get them to stop where they are supposed to by activating the "mist" feature.

Does anybody have any idea where the "park" sensor / switch is located? I'm assuming it must be internal to the motor itself. Is this repairable without replacing the motor? The motor works perfectly, and I'd hate to have to replace the whole thing just for a lousy sensor...

I have the same problem with my car at times. I am also wondering what is the problem. I just learned to live with it. as much as it pisses me off.

You may also want to check the ground to the motor. I had the same trouble on a different car, and the ground strap had broken off the motor. As soon as I reconnected it, it worked like a dream.

is that the ground from the wiper pump?

Actually I meant the ground from the wiper motor, if there is one. On the car I had the problem with, the wiper motor was mounted to the firewall with rubber bushings (probably so it could allow for some movement and to isolate noise and vibration from the motor from getting into the car). Anyway, there was a thin metal strap that attached to one of the mounting bolts and it wrapped around the wiper motor and to ground it. Well, that strap had a barely visible crack all the way thru it. Once I replaced it, it worked fine.

wiper fix

Hey guys, I had that problem. Once you start the wipers they just keep going and going until the body contol module BCM (computer) decides to turn them off. In these cars, the column control stick is just an input to the BCM. The BCM fires the relays to make the wipers run or run fast. The wiper motor assembly has a feedback signal to the BCM to indicate that the wiper is in the parked position, and the contact surface is dirty, so no feedback signal. You need to remove the wiper motor, open it up and clean the contact surfaces for the feedback signal. (just wipe it off real well, don't like "sand" it...). (The dealer won't repair it, they'll just tell you that you need a whole new motor assembly.)

Anyway, the BCM will eventually detect the fault and just stop the wipers from running wherever they are on the windshield until the next "key-on". Once they've stopped, you kind of need to "jog" the wipers with the control stick to get them to park. Once you've got them parked, it might work next time for a while, but maybe not.

wiper motor re/re

To get access to the wiper mechanism: 1. Take off the wiper arms. 2. Prepare to take off the black trim piece that covers the wiper mechanism by turning the two outermost "quarter turn" fasteners (screws with a little arrow pont on them) outward and remove the 6 plastic body screws and pull out their plastic screw retainers. You can "worry" the screws out with a blade along their edge, they are not really stripped, they only feel like that, just pull them out. 3. Then loosen the long soft rubber firewall to hood seal where it is attached to the strut towers by pushing up the little white plastic retainers with pliers. 4. Now remove the 4 metal clips mounting the trim piece to the firewall, and remove the trim piece along with the rubber seal.
Now, 5. Unplug the wiper motor connector which is kinda above the brake booster. 6. You can remove the whole plastic tub in which the wiper motor is housed by removing 5 fasteners: one nut on the strut tower, and 4 bolts more or less along the housing closer to the windshield. The whole thing comes out quite nicely. (Hint, smear the bolt threads with grease or "neversieze" when re-assembling to keep the rust away...) Then you can strip apart the rest and worry about getting the motor itself out of the housing. Then take the motor apart to find and clean the contact wiping surface inside... have fun.

Before going through all the trouble of ripping your car apart, do yourself a favor and replace the wiper relays.

My wipers did all sorts of crazy stuff from parking in the wrong place to going to fast or too slow on any of the intermittent settings, to not working at all.

I replaced one wiper relay and they now work perfectly. The wiper relays are located in the relay box by the battery. In the lid of that box you should find a graphic that tells you which relays are which. The relays are like 10 bucks and are easy as pie to replace.

You owe it to yourself to try replacing those first before going after the more drastic measures of wiper motor repair.
