Hello all-

I'm a newbie to dodge/chrysler cars, so please bear with me. I'm somewhat mechanically inclined but no expert by any means, and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. Before I get into it, I did try searching for this problem and couldn't turn up anything.

I have a 2002 Intrepid and it's been shifting funny. The car will run fine when I first start it up, but after I've been driving it at highway speeds for any amount of time, it won't recover top gear. What I mean is, if I'm on the interstate and get off, drive around town [again it doesn't matter for how long], then try to get back onto the interstate, it won't shift into back into top gear. But if I stop, put it in park, shut the car off and then start it right back up, it will shift into top gear and drive normal.

The fact that I can shut the car off, turn it right back on and it will drive normal tells me that it's likely a sensor or electrical problem of some sort, I just don't know what to check or where to look for it.

The solenoid pack for the 42LE also is integrated into the transaxle for quieter operation.
I got this from http://www.allpar.com/mopar/transmissions/42LE.html all I know is that, this means it's inside the transmission.

So unless you have experience working on automatic transmissions(which isn't fun, and is nearly impossible on a chrysler transmission) I would say it's probably time to take it to a professional and get it checked out.

Unless you think you can handle it, then there is probably someone else on this site that can help you out, because I'm more of an engine guy

I got this from The Chrysler 42LE automatic transmission (transaxle) all I know is that, this means it's inside the transmission.

So unless you have experience working on automatic transmissions(which isn't fun, and is nearly impossible on a chrysler transmission) I would say it's probably time to take it to a professional and get it checked out.

Unless you think you can handle it, then there is probably someone else on this site that can help you out, because I'm more of an engine guy
And that professional should be a chrysler dealer since alot of transmission shops don't know what they're doing and will tell you that you need a rebuild or a new/remanufactured transmission (Either one of which could cost $2000+) and half the time they don't even put the right fluid (ATF+4) in so you end up haveing more ptoblems. Unfortuinately a bad solonoid pack/valve body is a commom failure on 02-04 intrepids. Mine went out two years ago and cost about $900 at the chrysler dealer to replace both the solonoid pack and valve body (they also have to change the fluid and filter and replace the pan gasget). The labor isn't much more than a standard fluid & filter change. I believe Parts are around $600.

Yikes! Is it possible to do this job myself? I have the means available to me to drop the transmission and a stand to pull it apart, so does anybody know how difficult it is to replace those parts once it's out? I can probably get the money together for parts but that's at least a few weeks worth of saving.

yes it's posible, but do your research before you start. make sure you know every component and how it's suposed to work, and also my asumption on the solenoid pack is just a guess, that's why you should probably get a diagnostic first so you know what you have to fix.

If it's an external electrical problem, or a problem with the tcm you can fix it yourself very easily
