heres my normal routine for engine detail..

go to carwash
smoke and listen to howard stern till the engine cools down if its hot
lift hood
cover cai with plastic bags
spray engine with two cans of degreaser
smoke and listen to howard stern for about 20 mins
spray rinse with high pressure
close hood
start engine
go home


ive never used simple green...
my engine bay is pretty clean as it is, but i bought some today to try it out. im going to spray it on, then scrub the entire bay with an old toothbrush to ensure its clean

is this something i should do at the carwash? i dont use the degreaser at home because its so obvious when you have this huge trail and massive solvent stink from your driveway to the street as people walk by wondering wtf is going on lol

If you have some stubborn gunk in an out of reach area, go to Wally World and pick up as much SuperTech brake parts cleaner as you think you'll need (be warned...one can doesn't go far). Brake parts cleaner is a good solvent, and combined with the pressure that blasts out of that can, it will knock loose and clean off all that stubborn crap that you never thought you could get to.

Also, bonus that it dries with NO residue.

Simple Green + a toothbrush is my preferred method. Brake cleaner is really not designed for degreasing/cleaning painted surfaces or plastics. I usually rinse with a high-pressure attachment. Just be careful where you spray (avoid electrical connections, air intake, etc.) and blow out any concentrated areas of water with compressed air.

Brake Parts cleaner is made to be sprayed on brake parts...a job that requires it to have VERY particular properties. It has to evaporate with NO residue, and not soak into a brake pad. This makes it perfect for anything under the hood or under the car that needs a quick cleaning. I use it when cleaning out a tranny pan too. It's also safe if you happen to get it on an electrical connection, etc. Evaporates pretty fast, leaves no residue, and it's non-flammable.

You can get it on just about anything and you'll be fine. I did not recommend (and don't do it myself) spraying it on the outside painted surface of your car, but spraying it on the plastic and metal of every car I've ever owned, I haven't had a problem and the engine bays look great. Each to their own, however.

Simple Green is good stuff. But it'll take forever to detail your engine with a toothbrush :p I just spray it on, let it sit a while, spray a little more on a rag, and start wiping. When my engine was REALLY dirty, I gave her a good soaking in some degreaser, then rinsed it off.

When I use to work at the dealership back in my high school days as a lot boy/ detailer,
after the engine bay was cleaned with a de-greaser and 'knick picked',
we would spray Armor All all over the entire engine bay while the engine was still wet.
Drop the hood and check it out several hours later.

The water mixes with Armor ALL and coats everything real well and dries pretty even.
I detailed my engine this weekend, take a look....

I've gotten tips from a few people that use to be a detailer at dealers. Every tip starts out with de-greaser and then anything from armor all to a mineral oil. I hate mineral oil. Makes the whole engine bay feel like some kind of a major oil leak and the engine got covered.

Heres what I do.
Cover electronics in plastic bags/wrap.
While the engine is warm I spray on de-greaser (since working in a restaurant de-greaser is your best friend and works better on hot/warm surfaces).
Let it sit for 5 minutes.
Go at it with a paint brush or a old tooth brush.
spray it down. Take off plastic and wash the stuff that was covered with distiled water and a small dab of car soap and wipe off dry.
Armor All every thing, wipe off painted surface and go over painted surface with quick detailer.
