So, it's finally warm enough to give ol' white a good scouring like I do every spring.

One of the most hated of chores is removing the tar and crap that accumulates of the winter. Those little tiny flecks that almost look like rust.
And let me tell ya friend, you have no idea how much of that crud is on your car until you own a white one.
Well, I was ready to attack it with the usual hated ritual:
wash scrub, bug and tar remover, varosol, and more elbow grease than I have left in me. It usually takes an entire day to JUST get the tar off before I can even think of the wax cleaner, glaze and carnuba treatment.

I started at the trunk as that is always the worst area and I wanted to hit it while I was still fresh. After about an hour, I had one corner about 12"x12" done.

Jebus crisp!

There's got to be a better way.

So I skip on down to crappy tire 'cause my local autobody store is closed today (sunday).

Hmmmm.......clay bar. I wonder..........

Now, understand I'm a bit of an old fart (great white ain't just because of the car!) when it comes to what works and what doesn't. I'd always stayed away from this sort of thing, as the thought of rubbing clay all over my pristine paint always seemed.......well......wrong.
So I figure what the heck, try it on a small area and if it doesn't work, my daughter can always make a rabbit or an ashtray out of it.

Eeyipes! 25 bucks!

For a piece of putty no bigger than my......well.......you-know! Oh well, if it works........

So, I start on the rear fascia, low and out of sight. The box says clean and dry. Well, i just washed it, it's clean. But there's no way I'm rubbing this crap over my paint without lots of lube so I do it wet (wait-a-minute, my mind is going somewhere else.....;)).

The tar comes off! And pretty flipping easy!

JOY!

But wait, hows the paint underneath?

Dry it off..........dull.........no scratches..........clean. Whew!

Next I try it high on her flanks but this time dry with only the detailer. Son-uf-a.......It works even better!!!

DOUBLE JOY!

So the old dog has a new trick. Mothers clay bar has taken up a spot on the shelf next to all the old proven performers. (just gotta do the rest of the car now)

I still wouldn't use it on a car that wasn't squeaky clean though, just can't get the picture of sand in the clay scratching the paint.

Mothers clay bar. Recommended by this white car owner!

I have used Mother's Clay bar before, and I have a fresh one in the garage I need to use before Carlisle. If you really get into it, there are other brands and different grades of clay(as far as aggresiveness). From other brands, you can get just the bar too if you want to use your own dilution of some lubricant.

If you search on clay bar, you will probably find some of the older threads which mention some of the other brands. I think Zaino may be one

I have an Adams (purple) and a Mothers (yellow) and I use the same brands of detail spray with each. The Adams appears to work more easily, so I assume it's more aggressive, or a better lubricant, but neither leaves anything but a super smooth surface, ready for waxing. I just started using clay a few months ago, and boy does it ever save a lot of work.

i used the same mothers clay bar kit about a week ago.i took alot of time on the trunk lid, and its smoother than silk. i would say smooth as glass but its actually smoother than the window glass. i got called in to work about halfway through, so i did a rush job, but it came out great. im going to have a few days off next week so im going to do it all over again with no rush and some stiff drinks.

the other night i had a 24 hour shift watching tv and ''guarding'' the barracks from fire or intruders (making sure nobody left drunk), and i watched this hour long infomercial on some new claybar product. its called liquid ice i think, made by turtle wax. when i was at walmart a few weeks ago buying my mothers clay kit, the guy at the automotive counter reccommended the ice stuff, saying it doesnt make rubber trim white, and is easy to get off.. but i passed when i saw it was made by turtle wax.

Bah,,,Turd-le wacks.
I'll stick with clay bar.
It doesn't turn trim white, either. Not sure where that came from.

Use the clay on your glass too, speep...works wonders.

Some observations after use.

1. Too wet is never too wet. It will just slow you down though.
2. They say to have aclean dry surface before you start. Wet? nah, doesn't matter (see number 1). Clean? you bet your @ss! It takes imperfections out, not dirt! Dirt will scratch.
3. If you start hearing a "skitch skitch" noise, STOP! you've got a larger piece of grit stuck in the clay and it will scratch your paint. Take it out if you can see it, or fold the clay if you can't.
4.If you drop the clay, do not use it right away (sounds pretty obvious doesn't it?). Flush it with water and then remove any pieces of dirt you can see. Then knead the clay to get back to a clean surface.
5. It works great around corners and contours. But be careful working around headlights. If the clay gets in between the headlights and facia while you're rubbing, it get cought and then you'll have to fish it out. PITA!
6. I kept a bucket of water and a terry rag close by. as I finished a panel, I rinsed it off. This allowed me to see the spots I missed and removed the clay/dirt residue while it was still wet. Nice clean surface ready for wax tomorrow.

Can't think of anything else right now.

This is probably old hat to people who have used it before, just some of my observations.

I think maybe if the car is wet it may dilute the detail spray. Thinned out lubricant is not good. My .02 cents
I bought Mothers Claybar last fall, and look forward to doing it this week. I also bought Liquid Ice. Not impressed, but it does live up to the claim that there is no residue left over, and safe for black trim. It did not seem to last very long for me.

Been using clay for a few years, and it takes a lot of work out of detailing. Like everyone says, make sure the surface is CLEAN!

I haven't bought that liquid clay so this is opinion.

That liquid clay is not clay. A clay bar pulls contaminates out of the surface leaving the paint alone. Because you smear the 'liquid clay' around with a rag it has to act on the surface like a polishing compound or scratch remover to do its work.

Don't forget to wash your car with a 'dishwashing detergent' before doing the clay bar part. The dishwashing soap will remove all the old wax build-up and allow the clay bar to do it's work and not just slide over the surface.

I have been using a clay bar for years and my fav is the "Pro Bar" that is made by Meguires. It's a BIG bar, so none of that postage-stamp sized stuff for me. I also use the Meguires 'Detailer' to lubricate the bar.

After I am finished with the clay bar, I apply Meguires paint cleaner and polish BEFORE I apply a coat of Tech-Wax and I remove the excess wax and do my polishing with separate 'terry' cloths!...then I finish up with a fast pass with an electric buffer using a microfiber polishing pad.

SHINY! SHINY SHINY!....have a look see..

Theres no point in washing it with dish soap, the clay bar will take off any wax build up...

Me and a old friend of mine spent the day cleaning up my car. Spent around 80 bucks for all of the tools and cleaners. The night before I spent 4 hours looking up the perfect combo. Carnauba wax is the worst thing to use on a car with a clear coat. It dulls the clear coat. Anyway, I got the Zymol ploish the mothers claybar kit and Meguiar's scratch X. 13 fiber cloths for the polisher and 5 fiber for hand use. Some shop cloths for washing and a mothers dry rag. We did one panel at a time on the car. Wash, dried, 3 coats of zymol, claybar, 1 coat of zymol then a coat of scratch x. Took about 12 hours total for the whole car.

That sounds a bit odd. Zymol was a paint polish right? You say a 'coat' which makes me think you are laying down a coat of wax.

I think it should have gone wash, dry, claybar, polish. You should have clayed first to get contaminants out of the paint surface. If you used the polish first, you smeared any embedded junk all over the paint.

I was thinking the same thing. But why not use the dish soap(before claying only) if it gets rid of the wax? That is one less thing to get into your clay and it is probably one of the things that slows the bar down.

Me an my friend just used the Liquid Clay Bar on a Neon he was trying to sell last weekend and it worked very well. The paint was a smooth as glass when we were done. My complaints with it was it is messy and it was hard to get off the paint when I was done but I just ran the wash mit over the car again and it came right off. The bottle says just to rince it off but not all of it came off. I am going to do my car Sunday and I will post pics then. I forgot my camera when we did the Neon.
