A leaking injector does not equal black smoke out the tailpipe. But it could be the cause of the gas smell you’re describing.

I recently replaced one of the injectors on my 94 as there was a strong smell of gas from the driver side wheel well. The original factory fuel rail on the driver’s side also had a minor crack and that was replaced with a used fuel rail from a 96 Intrepid. The gas smell from the wheel well is gone but I sometimes get a waft of gas when the engine is cold. I might have to check my spark plugs again when the weather warms up.

Could be a bad spark plug (or wire). The fuel injector wire for that cylinder could be damaged/brittle. The coil pack could be failing.

Have you done a compression test on that cylinder? Low compression could mean a bad cylinder and the engine is simply wearing out.

How can you have good compression on a cylinder that won’t fire? Does your mechanic know that?

Since your car is OBD-II, have you or your mechanic checked for codes? The only other thing I can think of is one or both of your fuel rails are worn/leaking and you’re not getting enough fuel to that one cylinder.

Hey there! I have a 97 Intrepid.Back in November my car started shaking violently when the engine was running. Turns out the spark plug wires were bad, injector 2 was clogged, and the sparkplug burned out. Is there any lights on your dashboard? If so, I would reccomend maybe seeking a professional, since they would probably know more than you. No offence.

Thanks! I’m waiting on the injector to come in now.
