So my car doesn’t smoke when idling but when I give it gas it does. If I pull the hose off the PCV valve while it’s running there is smoke coming out of the hose. What does that mean and how screwed am I. It’s a 01 2.7 with just over 140k miles on it.

I thought those mostly only smoked on start up (cuz the oil that pooled up in the head would leak down the valve stems into the cyls while it was parked for any substantial length of time).

That symptom seems to me to more be like PCV building pressure and blowing oil past the rings into the cyl under heavy load.

And it's my understanding that these 2.7s need to not only have their PCV valves frequently cleaned with solvent (e.g. every oil change) but also all the plumbing to them (plus some of it replaced when it collapses; which I personally don't appear to have happened yet).

it also does it on sudden acceleration, particularly after a few seconds of coasting (for example: You’re tooling along at 61 mph, and come upon somebody doing 50 mph, so you ease up on the gas pedal to slow down, *then, suddenly* you get to a passing zone and you punch it to pass the water buffalo) - you’ll get a huge cloud of smoke out the exhaust. What happens is that when you decelerated by backing off on the gas pedal, you created a vacuum in the cylinders, and very little pressure during the power and exhaust strokes - a bunch of oil gets sucked into the cylinders past the worn valve stem seals, so now they’re loaded up with oil. Then you suddenly punch it and burn all that oil and blow a dark cloud out the exhaust.

absolutely - that will also cause it - so show some love for the pcv system before going to the trouble of replacing the valve stem seals. I have experienced both scenarios in my 2.7 - once due to a defective oem pcv valve getting latched shut, but also due to bad valve stem seals. Since replacing my valve stem seals and only using aftermarket pcv valves (not convinced they fixed the quality problem since i got a second oem pcv with the same issue that went into my 3.2 - it was going thru oil like crazy until i replaced the pcv valve with - again - an aftermarket one), the 2.7 has been totally smoke free and uses as close to zero oil as you ever get (essentially none).

When I unhook the hose front the pcv valve smoke comes out the hose and when I cover the valve with my finger you can hear and feel the valve clicking but the rpms do not change at all when I do this. I might mention the car day for over 18 months before I got it

@Welder1986 yeah, so as per @peva I guess the best test would be to see if your smoking comes from acceleration after coasting a ways (valve seals) or after maintaining a constant speed (PCV)

When idling you see no smoke come out the exhaust. When I accelerate there is a cloud then goes away. When Idling if I pull the hose off the pcv valve there is smoke coming out of it.

yes, but can you test it according to @peva's and my suggestions?

When is the smoking worse: When you're maintaining speed and floor it or when you're coasting and then floor it?

I have a Lincoln Town Car that has this issue. It will run and drive just fine, does highway speeds just fine, but when idling for more than a few seconds, say at a stop light or in a drive through when I accelerate it puffs smoke. It is my understanding that this is caused by oil pooling and seeping at the valves and being blown out the exhaust.

In contrast, I had a Dodge Durango that would smoke constantly, whether idling or accellerating. It is my understanding that this was caused by a stuck oil ring(s).

If you have oil coming out of the PCV hose, it could be a number of things, it could be oil sludge heating up and giving off smoke, it could also be blow by.

What color is the smoke? Is it mostly blue, grey or white?

My 2.7 ES is Smoking too at all Times, It'll be worse when It's given gas. I was convinced that it was the Valve Stem seals, I Tried to change that, Was Only able to do the Passenger side Bank (Intake and Exhaust) before I gave up from the Job proving to be too difficult (for Me/one person to do) I thought what I was able to do would've helped the situation somewhat, But, that effort didn't change a thing.. I even installed New PCV Valve after cleaning the old one didn't do anything either. I'm thinking now the driver side bank must've been where all the Smoking is Oozing from.. SmH.
