So I'm from texas all my life, and this will be my first winter driving in snow and ice. Ill be living on base and shouldn't be driving more than a mile or two to work. I'm getting some blizzak ws-50 snow tires from a lady who used them 2 winters, one of which she never went anywhere due to a newborn and another winter where she left a little more often but not much. I've seen pics and they look brand new. Now here's the question/// my tire siz is 225/60r16. These snow tires are 225/60r16. Is that fine or should I have moved down in width? Also what snow tires have you used and how did they perform? Any crazy stories that will warn me what not to do in the snow before, during, or after driving will be appreciated as well. I think them tires would be fine for snow! I'm just running my regular tires for snow, i'm not gonna worrie about any special tires.. The intrepid should get along easly in the snow with the V6 in the front, if you live in town i dunno if i'd even buy a pare. I live atleast 3 miles from a paved road so i'll be driving on gravel roads taht are a bit hilly till anyone even plows the snow out of my way.. A friend of our recked her intrepid wile drunk a wile back, she said during winter she'd go out and snow would be going up over the top of her car and she had no problem with not getting stuck! Best advice if you have to drive on a gravel road or a small narrow road is stay as close as you can to the center and leave plenty of time to react, never lock up the breaks!! Good luck!

I've got Dunlop Graspic DS2's (snow tires) on my '01 R/T. I purchased some OEM 16" (P225/60R16) rims from the wreckers for $50CAD each, I use these in the winter and store away my 17" R/T rims. Don't want to subject them to the roadsalt or damage them by sliding into a curb or anything. I'm in Toronto, Canada so I do have to deal with the snow. I have always used all season radials but tests show that snow tires are better. Yours sound like an excellent deal.

So what do I do if I come out in the morning and the cars covered in snow? Or ice? Do they make a brush or something? Is there something I can do to stop the ice from forming? I don't know if I'm getting a garage at ft drum well be staying at temporary housing.. A motel... for a few weeks.. So ok drive on the middle I'm assuming so you have room to play if it fishtails. Steer the same way the ass end is going and let of the gas right? Um ya any advice on all this winter driving is needed. It snowed once for like 10 mins in tx.

you would be surprised. i hated driving my 2 intrepids in the winter. one was a 93 ES 3.3L and the other was 01 R/T 3.5L HO. both had traction control, ABS, etc. the 93 was worse though, fishtailing all over the place. if you have autostick in yours, start in 2nd gear from a stop. makes a big difference. im also driving on paved roads all the time too. but you live in missouri, so you know how crazy our winters get sometimes.

Take a trip to wall mart and look at the snow brushes. I have a folding Oskar that works great!

4 snows on a fwd gives a great feeling of confidence on snowy roads,

Blizzacks actually work better with a few miles on them, so you should be fine.

Ft drum is where?

A little extra space is all you need between you and the guy in front of you.

Front wheel drive will pull you out of a skid its hard to do but step on the gas and "pull yourself out". And steer the way you want to go!

My pit bulls gonna hate me. Oh yeah and I'm thinking of getting remote start to warm it up in the mornings. It has keyless entry/ can they tie remote start in

You guys must have magical Intrepids or something, 'cause my trep sucks rat's ass in the snow.

I've got the GY TripleTreds, which is suppose to be one of the better all seasons, but I can't even get up the driveway. Tried lowering the pressure to 32 psi, still didn't do ****.

When the real snow comes in I'm gonna have to pay a fat drunk to lie on my hood just so I can pull up to my front door.

I'm with you on that. I've just gotten tired of posting that my experience is different than others. I think the Trep sucks monkey balls when it comes to winter driving. The stock tires were so sucky. I'm sure the weight of the car doesn't help either. When I went from stock to Yokohama Avid Tourings, I did notice a bit of difference, but I still wouldn't say that the Trep was a great car in the snow. Marginal at best.

yeah, i dont have auto stick in my car yet, but i hope to put it in before long.. I've got knobby tires on the intrepid right now, i think they will do great in the snow, every time i end up spinning the wheels in the yard it digs down atleast 5 inchest every time it slips, but the tires suck ass in the rain i can never get them to hook up!

Yes it is true that i'm only 15, is that a problem?

speepdaedeesi, dont let go of the gas that could cause you to loose control even more expecaly if the car down shifts, it'll lock up the wheels and you'll be going for a fun ride then! if you need to let off the gas be easy with it dont just go from half trottle to none.. As people have said if you start to fish tail or go in to a slide give it gas and dont let off till your out of the slide or the fishtial, but if your heading for a ditch um i dunno what to tell you man! Do your best to keep the wheels from locking up or spinning, slow starts, keep your engine warmed up b4 you take off incase you have to give it gas and it revs up..

Windshield washerfluid, rain-x has worked awsome for me in the past it should melt the ice right away, you might wanna look around and read up on some products tough! Make sure you have plenty of time to spare incase somthing happens, you slide off in a ditch anything, dont get in to a rush, and keep an eye out for things, be aware of your surroundings(spl?)!!

I put snow tires on my car for the first time last season, along with some steelie rims so i could keep my razorstars out of the snow and salt - I've really never had a problem with all-season tires in the winter, but then again, our winters aren't all that bad in the chicago area...

On a bad morning in the winter, when the car is covered w/snow and ice, first thing i do is start the car, and turn on both the front and rear defrosters, oh and turn on the heated seat ;). Then, i'll take out the scraper and clear the windows. On most mornings this is ample time for the engine to warm up before i head out. If it's really cold (like say below 0F), i'll let it warm up a few minutes more.

A word of advice if you've never driven in snow before, is when the first snow hits, even if it's just a light snow, head out to a empty parking lot. Don't go crazy, but see what is going to happen if you need to make a sudden move. Find out what your tires are going to be capable of doing.

Overall, give yourself more time to get where your're going - drive slower, turn slower, brake slower, and in general pay attention to whats going on around you. People with SUV's tend to think they own the road in the winter time and will come barreling down the snow covered roads at full speed.

I don't see how bad the Intrepid really is, being FWD is still has an advantage to a degree than other cars. I never got stuck in that car during the snow and that was with the craptastic Eagle GA tires, hell I never got stuck with my other Dakota with no weight in the back, rear drive, peg-leg all the way.

Getting stuck is not my measure of how well a car does in the snow. It's simply a matter of physics. Big heavy car does not equate to easy shifts in momentum, whether it be braking, turning, accelerating, etc. Add to that marginal stock tires and you get a car that doesn't perform well in the snow.

Any vehicle isn't going to preform as well in the wet stuff as in the dry. It's the driver that ultimately is in control, driving around like a fool is going to get you into some serious **** regardless of tires, ESP, ABS ect. Of course why would anyone push their vehicle to the limit on pavement that you can hardly walk on with your own two feet?

Big heavy truck doesn't mean easy driving either in the snow, ever try stopping with rear only ABS?

People need to understand on how to allow extra time for driving in bad weather, instead of being "just in time" for everything and learn that regardless of what wheel or wheels are being driven your not invincible. Hell might save a life or two eventually.

I noticed all the peeps with reg or all season tires had complaints. Snow tires .. No complaints. Kinda makes sense. Yeah that empty parking lot thing sounds like a good idea. These tires are blizzaks and I've read nothing but good reviews on em. The woman I'm buying them from had em on a trep and said they worked wonders. Like I said before I don't plan on going off pavement, just taking extra precautions bc we've never driven on ice or snow b4. Plus if the wife slides into something there's no "I didn't have snow tires" excuse. Lol. Thanks for the tips guys. U rock

Can't speak for others, but for me, it's simple - the forward traction just isn't there. I don't have a problem with handling, but there's not much handling to talk about if I'm just sitting there spinning, not moving an inch.

What do I consider "bad in snow"? When I have to park 50 feet away from my front door because my car just can't make it up the driveway, or the street leading up to the driveway. I made a huge show for my neighbors every time I get out of the house...

I can see the tires being one reason. The TripleTreds have a lot of rain grooves, much like a performance summer tire, so it sucks in deep powder. I guess a good snow tire needs to have a lot of perpendicular treading (versus longitudinal).

I'm going to take what you say in the best way in that I don't think you meant it as you were talking directly to me when you were quoting me. So with that said, I do agree that people shouldn't rely too much on technology to save them from stupidity.

But to be fair, when I refer to the Trep's poor performance, I'm talking about the complete opposite of going fast. I'm talking about how when driving 30 mph, it takes a trep much farther than a typical car to bring it down to zero. I'm talking about how at a green light, other cars are leaving the trep behind because the tires are spinning too much or traction control has to kick in too much cause inertia states that 3500 lbs will want to stay at rest. I'm talking about when going 15 mph, you can steer all you want, the car is still going to go straight into the curb. I don't know where you live and do all your winter driving, but all my winter driving in my Trep comes from living in Minnesota and Iowa (not in KC, where I live now, cause they don't have real winters here).

And yes, I used to drive a company van weighing in at 7500 lbs with rear ABS only. It's much better than a 7500 lb van WITHOUT rear ABS.
