the south carolina highway patrol just purchased 20 brand new intrepids for there fleet. they also bought 20 impalas to test. they are trying to get away from the crown vics because of the cost to buy and maintain them (we've got some budget issues!). the cars are all silver with a double reflective navy blue cheat lines running from front to rear. most have the standard blue strobe light bars. im waiting for one to sit still long enough to get some pictures. The cars look awesome and are getting good reviews. many departments here in the south are going with either treps or impalas, which surprises me because most southerners are FORD people (the good ol boy system runs well down here). if you travel through S.C., keep an eye out!!

Also I bet the infamous fuel tank problem made them change their minds about staying with the Crown Vics. (When the Crown Vic gets rear ended there is a good chance that the car will explode)

When any car gets rear ended at speed there is a good chance that it will explode.

The Intrepids are having problems of their own, brakes that start on fire. There have been quite a few police organizations that have stopped using them, or stopped thier orders for them because of it.

yep, the brakes on the intrepid seem to be overly combustible. for some reason they overheat and catch fire. i think it was either detroit or nashville quit using them because of it. and yes, hit any car in the rear and it may explode. i drive a c/v everyday and im not more concerned than i would be in any other car. BY THE WAY i helped a trooper with an accident today and he had one of thetreps!! it was beautiful!!!! its a 2003 full package with the electroluminescent dash--very cool. black interior dual bucket seats w/column shift. the hubcaps are ugly though. they need to use the center caps imo. the trooper loves it. he also loved the fact that i went nuts over it.

Down here in the Lowcountry the town of Summerville just got an Impala. only one.

I'd be interested to see what would happen if they randomly chose 15 cars to rear-end at 75mph with a semi and see how many don't get damaged so bad that it would've killed the driver on impact let alone puncture the tank and start on fire and/or explode.

i'm pretty sure when cars get tested by the government, it may not be 75 mph, but they're definitely shovin a big block a steel right up the car's ass at about 40 or 50 to test safety.

the crown vics are having problems with high speed incidents like that of a pursuit...we're talking highway speeds+

I personally think the impala with the supercharged motor makes more sense than the intrepid though....240hp and 280ft/lbs at the stock boost setting. I imagine the patrol cars have a upped boost level, and for those who know these are the same engines that made the turbo regals and grand nationals famous, just with a blower....which would make adding a intercooler difficult and the blower does take power to turn, so the motor cant make as much as the old turbo buicks, but still has a lot of potential, espcially for a FWD application.
Its a very impressive motor, can you say torque steer :D

Either way i am happy to see the gov't move away from V8s and go with something more efficient and faster than them vics...

Why is it every exploding fuel tank problem seems to be in a FORD? from Pintos to Crown Vics..............and Escorts, Tempos and Aerostars with faulty igntion switches that cause fires.

FIRES OCCUR RATHER DAILY
fast only rolling downhill
fails on rainy days
****ed over royally dude

the list goes on.

the problem apparently lies in the fact that the fuel tanks are mounted near a certain suspension bolt that seems to puncture the tanks in hard rear enders.

The tanks are (apparently) mounted aft of the rear axle (not sure on that fact). Harder to mount the tanks more forward on a RWD car.

tank is in front of the axle. on all c/v's. hence the bolt puncturing the tank as it travels forward after getting hit from behind...

yes the brakes SUCK NO WONDER COPS DONT USE IT...man terriable the worst brakes on any car i have driven in my life,,i know its a big car but forgod sake i am 20 and know big car = more weight = more inertia= MORE [email protected]# BIG BRAKES!!! they suck and i am lookin for buying A/M C/D rotors and best pads money can buy to safley stop the car..my 13 yr old maxima ( weighs more ) stops in its factory specs of 130FT while this PID needs a hell lot more than 130ft!
