I have a 98 2.7 doing the same thing. Thought it was the battery and had it changed and the charging system tested. Every once and a while I turn the key and no starter just a click. I thought it could be the shifter switch, But when I Shift into drive I get no click. Shift back into park and it will click again. After 10-15 tries it fires up. Then it will work nornal for 1-2 weeks. ???????????? Afraid to take it into the Chrysler dealer, they will likely say it needs a new engine. Those guys are bad.

Well, I talked to my Brother in Law and his Brotheris a Mopar mech in another city, this is what he's telling me, Needs new starter contacts, but most repair shops will sell you a new starter. So I guess I should take it in before it gets worse and strands me in the cold.
Thanks for the advice guys I'll look at the battery contacts Sunday..

Just got mine fixed it was getting really bad. It was the starter. It works like it should now. The dealer said the change alot of these starters because they have very weak contacts that burn out often. Another DC cost saving move biting us in the ass.

Does anyone know if it is better to use a non-mopar made replacement? Maybe they have better contacts.

I just had a rebuilt unit installed. Don't plan to keep the car long. The new Altimas look good. 3.5(240 HP) 5 speed. Too bad The intrepid is the same car from 98 or I might be tempted to buy another. (Then he slaps his head and thinks "why buy another DC car?")

Gee, that's too bad to hear you won't be with us much longer. I'm sure we'll miss all that helpful info you choose to share with us

Dang...I'll see if NAPA has one and do it myself. Any idea if its that difficult to swap? $200 dollars....for a starter.. and no reach around...

Dont know if U resolved yet.
The Intrepids are a piece of crap when it comes to the starting system, especailly the starter. I have had 8 intrepids in my family, and I can predict what will happen next to one of them, based on the mileage on the car. The starter solenoid contacts get sticky, do not spin the coil to generate the current to start and hence it plays dead silence (no clicks) when you turn the key. Turn the key and it might start due to some displacement from the first attempt. Chrysler purposely made it that way so the dealers can make a living out of this - Cant repair, and have to buy new - That way the new parts also get to earn their livelyhood.
Why do you think the fuel filter in those cars are INSIDE the fuel tank, and is impossible for you to replace , like the hondas. Answer : Chrysler needs you to go to the dealers and pay them big bucks - U go figure this out.
