My steering rack is sliding inside the clamp on the passenger side. The black boot is still there but it is sliding inside. This has caused the steel crossover line to leak twice as I have replaced it and now its done it again. I put some rubber innertube as a spacer around the passenger side clamp but apparently this has failed. What do I do? plz help me!!

I don't have experience with the 97, so I don't know how much work it is to do, but it sounds to me like your bushings have worn out and you need to do a rack bushing replacement... OR that you need to replace the bolts holding it down, I didn't think the rack could slide due to being bolted down through bushings.

Got pictures of the offending parts?

The bracket on the passenger side is a separate part that bolts to the rack.

Sounds like now that it has been loose for a while it has worn the metal on the bracket and the rack not allow for i tight fit any longer.

If it were me i would replace the entire rack assembly.

On the passenger side you can take off 4 nuts and the top bracket comes off. The rack casing itself is very shiny where it has been sliding. Checked today and found a used rack at a boneyard for 50 bucks. Probably try that. Hoping I wouldnt have to replace the rack.

By the way, how do you know if you got this assisted steering deal or not?

That's what i thought it would look like but i have to say this is a odd problem that iv never herd of before.

If i ever get the time im going to replace mine and have had the new rack for weeks now but i cant seem to get my family to leave alone long enough to do it lol.

I always get the oddball out of the bunch. You can always sabotage your vehicle and make them think its not running lol. My trep was run into the ground instead of taken care of and now its costing me out the ying yang.

Its our daily driver and my project vehicle and my wife drives it to work everyday so that not an option lol.

This weekend i have to replace some floor joists and all the flooring in my kitchen thanks to a piss poor repair done to it before my wife and i moved in but hopefully the following weekend i will be able to get to it god willing and the crick don't rise lol.

Well good luck to you. I guess Im lucky to have my f150 truck. All it needs is the front fuel pump. Has the old crossover tank return problem due to bad fuel pump, but she runs good.

Yeah we need another Trep so i can put this one up on blocks so i can finish everything i need and want to do to it but so far i haven't been able to find anything at a good price.

Here:


There are only two types of steering racks for our cars Standard Power Steering and Speed Proportional Steering so if yours doesn't have the plug on it its a Standard Power Steering rack.

If it does have the plug then it the Speed proportional Steering rack.

Standard Power Steering.


Speed Proportional Steering.

Another thing i will recommend when you get the used rack replace the bushings before you install it so you save yourself the headache of doing it later,

Sorry it has been so long as I've got a lot going on right now. The problem was that the entire rack housing was busted in two under the bellows. I put the used rack in and its never steered that well since I bought it. I thought I would report what the problem was so that next time someone else's rack slides in the passenger side, they would know their rack is busted. Glad to say mine is not the assisted steering which made the rack I found work lol!! The more I fix the more clunking it does tho. Need to get me an o2 sensor upstream as mine is not giving any data according to a scanner. Car is beginning to run a bit warmer than usual gonna check the coolant level and strength when car cools enough. Got through changing the oil 1st time since I owned it, the oil was black as could be. By the way CDMCCUL, the red trep in your sig looks just like my trep!!
