Hey guys, i just finished adding factory steering wheel controls to my 2000 ES.

I decided to do it a lilttle differently than everyone else.
I went to the junkyard last weekend in search of the steering wheel and clockspring, unfortunatelt i had no luck, with the exception of a grand cherokee. I pulled just the controls from the steering wheel. These buttons are identical to the ones found in the lh cars.

Since i was unable to find a steering wheel backing from an lh car witht eh controls, i decided to modify my current wheel. After removing the steering wheel and doing some quick measurements, i cut some holes in the back of the wheel and mounted the controls. They actually fit the contours pretty well.

I was unsuccessful in finding a used clockspring so i purchased one for a 2001 intrepid from the stealership for $85. The funny thing is the one with the wires for radio controls was half the price as the one without. The only difference between the clocksprings is the extra two wires. The 2001 clockspring has the same connector as the 2000 one on the backside and has the same airbag connector on the front, but the 2001 used a different connector for the cruise buttons. I just cut off the connector and spliced in my current buttons. The factory harness that lead from the steering wheel to the clockspring didn;t have the extra wires installed in the plug so i pressure fitted some terminals on, which worked great.

The radio i'm using is an aftermarket alpine 9855. A company called pac makes a universal interface that allows you to use the factory steering wheel controls with an aftermarket alpine radio. They also make one that is universal to just about any aftermarket radio as well. The one i used was the alpine specific adaptor. This module intercepts the signal from the radio controls directly at the steering column so this elminated the need for a 2001+ bcm. On the other hand without the bcm, i didn't have a voltage input to the steerign wheel controls. for this i simply grounded this wire. So i had the input for the controls running to a ground and the output to the alpine module. Each button has a different resistance level that the module reads and interprets as a certain function on the radio.

Once installed the module was programmed by selecting the radio functions and pushing the steering wheel buttons in order for the module to learn what function each button si to eb associated with.

Everything went pretty smoothly on the install, with the exception of my ground. Originally i grounded the steering wheel controls straight to the steering wheel, behind the airbag, but this was apparently a poor ground spot and caused the module to function really erratically. So i had to ground someplace other than the steering wheel itself. After doing that, they worked perfect.
That is the basic idea of installing the controls usiang an aftermarket radio. If you still have the stock radio, then you will need to run the steering wheel button wires to the bcm(2001 and newer cars). If you have a 1998-2000 car then you can add a 2001 bcm as a standalone unit to control the sterign wheel controls. In this case you will hook up about 7 wires to the bcm. power, ignition, 2 grounds, pci bus to radio and the input and output for the steering wheel controls. if wired correctly, this will allow for radio controls on any 98-00 lh model. If anyone is interested, i can post the pinouts neccesary for wiring the secondary bcm.


I will try to load some pictures of the install up tomorrow.

I think there's already a how-to in the How-To section about this. There was a how-to on the PAC module in the Audio/Video section for a long time as well (I cleared the sticky when the view count basically quit increasing).

Like you said, the switches are basic ground referenced, resistive multiplexed bus making it very easy to work with...

so does anybody know where that how-to is?
I'm adding an aftermarket deck soon and I wanted to add the steering wheel controls as well
(I searched it out and it gave me this topic)

lets see required tools are
#2 philips screwdriver
couple of torx screwdrivers to pull the airbag
steering wheel puller to pull the steering wheel to replace the clockspring.
a dremel to cut the holes for the buttons
hot glue gun to hold the buttons in place
and some wire cutters and electric tape

as far as steps go. it was real simple

i pulled the battery and let the car sit for 10 minutes, i then removed 2 torx screws to pull off the cruise buttons, then two more torx to remove the airbag. once the airbag was out, i popped the steering wheel off using a 21mm socket and the steering wheel puller, and unscrewed the plastic backing from the wheel.

I then cut the holes inside of the plastic piece and glued the buttons in place. once those were in, i screwed the backing back onto the steering wheel.

Clockspring replacement was real easy, remove two screws, and unplug it and screw in the new one and plug it in.

after swapping the clockspring, i reattched the steering wheel. Once thw wheel was on, i placed in the cruise buttons to the new clockspring along with the input and output wires to the radio controls. once this was done, i simply reattched the airbag and screwed back in the cruise buttons.

For the radio controls, i ran two wires from the back of the clockspring to the back of the radio. one that went to ground and the other that went to the input of the aftermarket interface module. The other end of the module plugged straight into a special port on my alpine radio. If i was doing this with the universal module i would have had to mount an infrared eye in a spot where it could send a signal to the radio.

Once it was all connected, i recconected the battery and started the car to verify the airbag still worked. Once that was ok, i programmed the module using the direction it came with and then put it all back together, it was that easy. and for the two days they've been in my car, i'm absolutely loving not having to reach over to the radio constantly.

the only real complete how to out there is on how to remove the steering wheel, it doesn't mention how to do the radio controls. If you are looking to do an aftermarket radio then you should be able to find something useful from my basic how to, if not i can definetly answer questions for ya.

Are you guys actually reading the how-to's? Antibody's how-to discusses the radio controls at the bottom, I used this step by step to install my controls and it worked perfectly. ;)

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I figured it was better than starting a new one on roughly the same topic...

I've got a '99 trep, and I want to get one of the newer steering wheels with audio controls and the newer clockspring... but I don't know anything about "adding" a 2001+ BCM... aren't those things expensive? And where would you "add" it? I'm not even sure where my current BCM is...

Not that expensive from a junkyard. As for the location it's right behind the relay panel on the driver side of the dash, just a little up further into the dash.

but to attach a second one... is it difficult to get to (how much has to come out for me to get to it)? is it difficult space-wise to fit 2 BCM's in there? how would it be connected?

Wow, thanks for reviving this thread. I somehow missed it the first time around. I was just talknig with a number member about using the steering wheel controls with the pac module and an aftermarket headunit.

well you could stick the second one anywhere you want essentially. There may even be enough room under the drivers side dash. I'm not sure of the exact connections needed, but i know it needs a 12v , a ground, an ignition and the inputs and outputs for the radio and steering controls. do a search, there was a respected member on here that had made a conversion kit once.

The BCM is maybe 4 in by 4 in by 1.5 in. Thats just a guess from what I remember but probably not too far off. It would be pretty easy to stuff up there or behind the radio in the center or inside the walls of where the shifter and center console are.
