Apologies if this has all ready been discussed, or if it's just a dumb question.

I love my '99 Dodge Intrepid, but the one thing that prevents it from being the perfect car is that it's an automatic. I get no satisfaction in the AutoStick, and really wish Dodge sold a version with a manual transmission.

Is this a possible modification i.e., taking an automatic car and making it a stick shift? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

anything is possible if you have the money and resources. im sure you could do it but it would cost alot and take alot of time to do. and most intrepid drivers use the trep as their main daily driver (not to mention arnt overly rich) and cant let it sit for months. but if you have the money and time to do this, that would be sweet if you could get something to work.

Can't you get the Stratus with a stick in the 2.7? And all the LH cars use the same transmission. If you could get a manual out of a Strat 2.7 and a bit of fabricating (a bit...yeah right!) you could probably do it.

I changed my Fiero from an Auto to a stick, but that was using all donor parts from another Fiero...so it was defintely quite a bit easier.

Actually, the fabrication wouldn't be that bad. The bellhousing would match to the 2.7L Intrepids, and perhaps the 3.2 and 3.5. If not, the cost of having one made isn't that prohibitive.

The only tasks after that would be installing the extra pedal, the stick itself (no problem really), and routing the linkage. Definatley an all weekend job (or a couple) but not totally unachieveable.

does the 2.7 in the stratus sit longitudinally like the v6s in LH vehicles, or does it sit transverse? if they are not of the same orientation, i would imagine that this would make the fabrication more troublesome.

Almost positive they sit sideways, but it's just a matter of fabricating a trans mount, then routing the cables to the clutch and stick.

I think the hard part would be putting a clutch pedal in the car. If you look at the contour of the floor is pretty shallow. The pedal travel of the clutch is far greater than the space available. But hey if you can figure out a way to put an manual trans in I am sure you can figure the rest out. As for the manual in the 2.7 stratus , it may bolt up to the engine but the orientation of the output shafts is opposite of what you would need with a engine sitting front to back like in the LH.

Thanks for the great info. Being a total newbie to this, any suggestions on where to go to find some more information and maybe get some quotes? Should I hunt around for a good mechanic, or are there specialty shops that are well-known for this?

Again, any info will be appreciated! After reading the responses, I'm beginning to get a glimmer of hope that this is possible! :)
