I’m undergoing some surgery on my 04 2.7 Dodge Intrepid SE and I need to get the timing cover off. To do this, the PS pump must be unbolted. In the Hanes manual I’m following, it says 2.7s have a tensioner you need to pry back with a flat head screw driver. However I’m struggling to find this tensioner let alone how I should pry. This puts progress on a standstill til I can figure this out. Below a picture of where I think the tensioner is at the moment. Please let me know if you know better than me. Thanks for your time!

I swore off aftermarket manuals several years ago due to getting burned by gross misinformation. Perhaps they have improved some over the years, but I still don't trust them.

Below is from the '04 FSM. The alternator/power steering belt tensioner pulley is adjusted by first loosening the locking nut (fig. 1, item 2), and then adjusting belt tension using the jacking bolt (fig. 1, item 4), then retightening the nut.

I was thinking you had an '04 FSM. If so, p.s. pump removal and installation instructions are on pages 19-60, 61, and 64. It's a bit tricky, but the instructions are accurate.

I already removed the AC tensioner pulley, the Crank pulley, and the Serp. belt tensioner pulley. The PS pump is loose (I can move it up down left and right but not in and out) but it won’t separate. The manual said I didn’t need to remove the lines but now I’m starting to doubt that. Is there something that might be in the way a particular way to take it out? I’m very confused. Tomorrow I’ll send a video of the movement so you can visually see what I mean.

FSM = Factory Service Manual

Aftermarkets manuals are kften a very poor imitation of FSMs.

Like I said - it's tricky. It was several years ago that I did what you're doing, so I don't remember the details of the difficulties of getting the pump out, but my recollection is that if you pay attention to the details of the procedure, it works out.

Thanks so much for the instructions! I’m sure this will help a lot. Definitely think I should get an FSM when I can afford it. I’m sure they’re not cheap.

You're welcome.

FSM pdf's are floating around. I've been trying to get this site to host them and the parts pdf's for us, but I've given up on that. It would be nice to be able to post links to the manuals and say "see pages x, y, and z of the 'XX year FSM". It takes time to copy-paste (and is somewhat tedious to do on a phone), and I avoid doing that anymore - made an exception today. 👍

That would be nice if you could do that but oh well. If you have the PDF version, I think you have my email. I would really like to have that for the future as I’ll probably need to do many more repairs over my ownership of the car.

All you have to do is loosen the tensioner bracket bolts on the alternator tensioner and you will be able to get the power steering pump in or out , just did the same thing on mine had to install a new power steering pump on my '00 2.7

Look at the tensioner pulley or wheel and you will see its attached to a bracket i had to loosen the 3 bolts on it closest to the power steering pump to get the p.s pump out
