As all 1st Gen owners know, the Rotors
are not the best part of the cars design,
and its time again I need to change mine.. :(

My question is, has anyone found a rotor or
rotor and pad combination which lasts a considerable amount of time... Yes, I am
hard on my brakes...sometimes :)

Thanks

That is funny because just this last weekend I noticed my steering wheel vibrating when I applied my brakes. I don't know of any good rotors to buy except Mopar rotors or any aftermarket ones. I do have metallic pads and they stop the car very good but, they squeak and they like to eat up the rotors. Wish I could help. I think I will turn my rotors soon. I am pretty hard on my brakes too sometimes. :) Matt 97 3.5 ES

Weird,
2 years ago and about 30,000 miles ago I went down to the local parts store, purchased whatever rotor they had (don't think it was any big name brand) and the lifetime pads. Never had a problem and I live in WI where we see cold, hot, and salt. Very little but some squeeling which don't bother me, to me that just means my brakes are working. I don't think it cost me more than $100 to do my front brakes. I also heard the the MOPAR rotors suck.

The best aftermarket brand that I have found would have to be Raybestos. There rotors and pads are far above the rest. They may not be as good as OEM but they are cheaper than OEM.

There also is the rotors and pads from Stillen.com. These are a bit pricey though.

I am also hard on my breaks. One thing that I do to save my rotors is buy the cheapest pad available. These pads aren't anywhere near as hard as the lifetime warranty pads you can buy so they won't eat up your rotor. I have found that they stop much better too. Since I have moved to these pads I haven't warped a rotor yet and I have been doing it for 3 years. The only downside to this is that you have to replace the $10 pads more frequently (dependent on the use). This is much better than buying the $17 dollar lifetime warranty pads and replacing the rotor everyother time you replace the pads.

Just my .02
Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

My next brake upgrade will be Stillen's I think.

Right now I have good brakes, but they're all-metallic pads and they squeel like terrible. Sounds like someone is crushing glass in my wheels. Terrible sounding.
Oh well.

You know I have 85k on my car. I have not replace the brakes yet. I have had the car for 30k. Before that I don't know what happened. I di turn the rotors once. I let my ex-fiance drive the car by her parents in the hills by LaCrosse. After that the pedal was pulsating like crazy. Since then I have had no problems. Since I work at a garage I check them out every oil change. Still have 60% left. Don't know too many paople who drive their car harder than I do either. So maybe I am just lucky.

I was chewing my rotors and pads up with very mild driving. My problem was the calipers...once I replaced them, I have not had a problem. The mechanic said the Mopar calipers seem to stick and chew up everything else...just my humble experience

Hey, does anyone know if its possible to chang rear drum brakes to rotors?

Also, Im gonna put my new struts and springs in in a week or so, and was wondering if i should go out on a limb and change the pads at the same time. I was thinking that if they dont need it, ill just keep the pads till they do

I was under the impression that ALL LH cars had 4 wheel disc.. are you sude you have drum brakes back there?

If you do, the it should be very easy to convert as most of the LH cars are rear disc, and the critical parts could be found at a junkyard.

Hey 97purple_trep, yes you can convert the rear drums to disk brakes. It is not too hard either, apparently. Go to www.stillen.com, they have a drum to disk conversion kit for our car. I have a feeling it is kinda pricey though, but I think I will check it out, because I like having great brakes....it's the only thing that stops you from going into the ass end of the car in front of you! Or, you could steal the parts off a trep at a boneyard....BUT, you would need to get the brake lines too, because the disk brakes have different pressures than the drums...

You would also want to get the proportioning valve, and the antilock setup is probably going to be different. If you want my opinion, the Intrepid does not have enough power to warrant the expense of changing the entire brake system over. New hub, bearing, rotor, calliper, pads, rubber hoses, prop. valve, possible antilock crap (sensor, the disc the sensor reads, etc.), and who knows what else. Do not know if you would have to reprogram the antilock computer too. That's just a lot for something that is not going to help your stopping all that much. Get a good set of shoes and spend the rest of that money on redoing the engine. Just my opinion. Course I used to drive a 4 wheel drum vehicle too.

, sorry, just joined this forum, and this is the first time in like 10 months ive had a chance to even take a piss...cant sleep...are you sure you arent talking about the emergency brake? from what i konw, all lh models had 4 wheel disks; the emergency brake was a drum within the center of the rear disks...remove the rotor and there are the shoes...anyway, about the brake problems, these cars are really f'n heavy in the front, with really insufficient (and really confusing) front suspension setup. most of the weight problems comes from the fact that its a front drive car with the engine mounted forward on a transversely mounted tranny...to do a forward mounted engine, there is excess weight in the front...kind of like the front end of the car is too heavy for the components...ive gone through tie rod ends like candy, and since most of the braking is done in the front, brake pads and rotors are basically wore out before you know it. yeah, brakes suck, but i do believe that chrysler under their germanic conquerors have greatly improved the new intrepid.

INTREPID...UBER ALLES!
