Is there a way to test the A/C Compressor? I need to know if it is in fact the compressor or if it is just the clutch...

The car left me stranded 5 hours from home I had a mechanic there rebuild the tranny, replace the radiator, suspension links... I get home and there was a squeal under my hood when I turned on the heater. If I shut the heater off, the squeal went away. We unhooked the a/c compressor, no more squeal so.. now I am trying to figure out for sure what it is.. since I am a female, I need some good tests to make sure the mechanics are being straight up with me..

They are also telling me that the parts are around $500 and by the time I will need to spend $1200 to fix this issue... does that sound right?? Seems pretty high to me, especially when I see the a/c compressor online for around $200..

Welcome to the site Julie.

I would first start by tightening the belt or replacing it.

If the belt turns out not to be the issue then i would look at the tensioner pulley.

If you go to Advance Auto parts or Autozone they will help you diagnose the problem for free if its something simple like ah squeal in ah belt or pulley.

Generally if the clutch is going out they make allot more noise than just ah squeal.
