I was at a red light when the late model(prob. 88 or 89) BMW 3 Series pulls up and starts hummimg. After looking in my car for a bee I notice him. Light turns green and we race, so after kicking his ass my radar detector starts screaming so I slow down and get in the other lane. At the next red light this fool is in front of me, and thinking he is cool drops his car in Neutral revs his car then when green puts into drive and squeals his tires but what he dosen't know that a biker cop is right behind me. You should of seen the look on this guy face when I drive past him when the cop is pulling him over.

yeah, radar detectors are pretty nice... i had my dads truck this weekend (96 Ram, 5.9l) so i could deliver a washer and dryer to my brothers house.. anyway, i was driving down the interstate at about 75 (speed limit here is 65) and i slowly pull alongside a newer mustang (v6 probably because it wasn't all that fast) and he sped up a little bit, but nothing major, so i did too and passed him at about 80. After i pull back into the right lane i look in the rear view mirror and i see the two kids in the stang look at each other, then he pulled into the other lane. I stepped on it too and he couldn't catch up which was pretty funny because i had 4 people in the truck, plus the weight of the washer/dryer in back. I let off when the speedo hit 100 and he came flying by. Then all of a sudden my radar detector went off, and he must of had one too because we both slammed on our brakes. We were pretty lucky too because we passed 4 state troopers within the next 10 miles....

Although radar and laser detectors probably save peoples' asses a lot... I dunno if buying one right now would be worth it for me. None of the cops in my area use radar... they use lasers that are only 4 feet wide at a quarter mile away. I read an article in the local paper about them spending such and such money on these new radar guns. So basically, if the detector goes off, it's just telling me that the cop got my speed, and slowing down wouldn't do any good.

CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHICH IS A GOOD RADAR DECTOR. BECAUSE I WANT TO BUY ONE, BUT DON'T KNOW WHICH ONE IS THE RIGHT ONE TO BUY. I SEEN A RADAR DECTOR FOR ABOUT $150 AND OTHERS FOR $85.

Don't be so sure. Granted you have VERY little time to react, but lasers can be deflected. Therefore your detector can pickup the deflected laser beam(sometimes) that bounces off of something else before a straight beam has targeted your car.

I know first hand from working with and being friends with some officers that most radar detectors nowadays pretty much just tell you you've been caught.

New technology for radar/laser guns have come out that reliably detect up to 1000 yards (3000ft) away. I've seen these things in action. To test it, on officer drove at a predetermined speed with a cruiser with a calibrated speedometer on the freeway while another operated the gun. At 1000 yards there was less than a 5mph discrepency between the speedometer and the gun. Needless to say I was impressed.

The moral? With those new guns officers can catch you before you even see them.

That is why I hardly ever speed. I have been caught once and this is how. There was a hidden cop somewhere. Down the road (about a mile) there were about 3 or 4 officers pulled over on the side of the road. The cop with the radar/laser gun would wait until you get very close to him/her. If you're speeding, he/she radios the other cops your description and stuff, and the cops down the road pull you over. I was doing 40 in a 30. I didn't know the speed limit dropped. Damn!

In many or all parts of Canada, especially in the province of Ontario (me, Ottowrkr GR8wht? and others), radar detectors are illegal. Caught with one, they make you take it out, put it on the side of the road and then hand you a baseball bat. Not to hit the officer. Take it from there.
