hello every1 I have a 2000 trep w/a 2.7L 174K miles, got it for my wife ran real bad but was cheap so I jumped on it. when I got it home (towed on flat bed) i checked the compresion to find it had 2 dead cyls. a leakdown test show bad exhuast valves on those 2 cyls show off to the machine shop that head went after reinstall the car fired up an ran gr8t accept for the timing chain rattleing real bad I pulled the valve cover off the rt side an found the tensioner was not holding the arm agaist the chain so I put a new tensioner in, fired it up and after bout 10 min. the noise went away, drove the car down the road maybe 5 miles and the chain noise came back, pulled the cover off again and there was some slack on the chain, pushed the arm over and the tensioner came out further to take up the slack got it all back together and now when it is started it is quit til it warms up then it make s the noise again, this takes about 10 min. and you can shut it down wait for it to cool off crank it back up and in 10/15 min. it will start slapping again. I pulled the oil sender out and put a gauge on it and the idle oil presure starts @ 65psi then slowly drops to 20psi after about 15/20 min warm up it will jump rt back to 65 when i bring the RPMs up. I'm going to replace the tensioner again but my ? is will a chain stretch as it warms up? & is 20 psi @ idle enough to keep the tensioner from going slack? srry 4 the long post but I wanted to give as much info as i could. thanks

is there any way you can get a video of the car running with this noise going on? i'm guessing when you put the tensoner in you snapped it in place...right? When doing all this work you did replace the waterpump....right? .... because if the waterpump hasn't been replaced in a long time that can be a source of the slack in the tenson as the shalf and seal on the waterpump begins to fail.

I inspected the pump and suspect it has been replaced not to long ago as it didnt have the brown colaration as the oil pump and the rest of the block in there ,i didnt feel any play in the shaft and it felt smoth when i spun it, I would have put a new one in it at this time if funds would have allowed it but it was a tough bite in my wallet already with the headwork and then a new tensioner which i believe has failed, since when i pulled it down again it was colapsed & not even touching the arm anymore (it did when i snapped it in the 1st time) when i removed it i pushed it in with just finger presure and it will not pop back out. when I get it made up from advance ill put in it and crank the motor over (not starting it) with the dovers off to see if it holds and ck to see if the chain is streched. sure hope not (another $140) I had my chance to get a refund from the dealer but really wanted to give the car a good home but am starting to lose hope. I already have 2 money pits 77 ramcharger 4x4 and a 72 charger that i wish i had cash 2 do somethg with. ive had the 4x4 for 20 +yrs and the charger for almost 10.
