I allowed my friend to drive my car this saturday, and he happened to get a flat tire. After an hour spent changing to the spare I noticed that there was a hole in the tread and a curb hole on the side that started leaking air. So I started noticing similar holes on my other tires and started thinking if they leak air just as easily, or if the flat tire resulted in the opening of this curb hole. I have the original Goodyear Conquest tires that I haven't rotated or balanced for 10K miles. The tires have 35,300 miles on them, which is also the car's mileage. I believe the tread life is 50K. Do you guys think it's dangerous to continue driving with these tires? Or are Curb wholes normal?


BTW, My friend didn't even apologize!!! Do you guys think I was deserving of an apology? It's not like i'm asking him to pay for the tire!!! :confused:

Welcome to the board, damn right he should appologize. Holes in the sidewalls is not a good thing. If the tire is deteriorating on it's own and the tire life is still 15,000 miles to go, I would stop in at a Goodyear dealer and say, Hey what gives?

virtuiisadfnaasa;lk.... what do you mean by "curb" holes. are these holes from running into the curb? if so, sidewall isn't designed for that type of abuse and therefore will not be GY's fault. if this is not what you mean, please explain.

Yeah, an apology would be nice, and try to break it to him easy that he'll never be driving your car again. Get him some bus tokens. I rode with a girl last week and within about an hour we drove over 4 curbs. Better than scuffing the sidewalls i guess, but for God's sake, it's not like they jump out in front of you or anything.

thx for the reply guys. By curb holes I mean the holes on the side of the tire from rubbing up against the curb. I probally will end up getting a new set of tires which I'm not too happy about, but it's better to be safe then get a flat going 80 on the highway. I'll be sure to park 2 feet away from the curb just to be safe with the new ones.:D

BTW somehow my friend's new 2003 civic got white pray paint on it with the words " i'm sorry " spelled out.:wink:

ouch!!... hope he gets the hint.

sidewall damages are not repairable (not properly anyway). the best thing to do is to get new tires and, as you already have stated, park away from the curb. OEM tires generally do not get the miles that trade tires do (even if it is the same brand and pattern). with 35K miles, you should be about ready for new tires anyway.

the question you ask is similar to "which came first, the chicken or the egg".... it's difficult to tell whether the sidewall puncture resulted in the flat, or you running it flat caused the puncture to open up. anytime you have a significant cut, puncture, etc., you add stress risers to that particular area. add to this the deflection when the tire rotates with 1000lb of load on it, or when you hit a pothole, etc.... the situation doesn't get any better.

it really is amazing what tires go through and how they hold up. afterall, they're the only contact you have with the road.... 4 small areas on each corner of your car. so you really should look into new tires. (sorry for rambling)

Yo, you want believe what happened, to my friend who fuked my car......he got into an accident with this guy and it was totally not his fault, but hes paying out of pocket not to raise insurance.

really though, if it wasn't his fault, shouldn't the other guys insurance pay for it? if so, it shouldn't raise his insurance anyway. what state do you live in?

Im from NYC, he was passing a double parked van, an it started parallel parking, and the van tore his bumper off from the right side, it was hanging by the left side. He is 17 and his dad doesn't want it on his insurance history, so its gonna be about $400 to fix. The other guy was trying to put it like it wasn't his fault, so he has to pay out of pocket.
