Well, last weekend marked the end of my 5 year run with my 99 Dodge Intrepid ES. I purchased a 2004 Dodge HEMI Durango SLT. So far, I am loving it. Its nice to have rear-wheel drive again and you can't beat the massive increase in horsepower and torque.

All in all, my 99 was THE BEST car I ever owned. In the 5 years I owned her, outside of replacing the normal wear and tear stuff(oil, tires, etc), I only had to replace the starter. What a great car! I must admit, I was a tad heart-broken when I parted ways. I can only hope that the new Durango is just as good.

Thanks for everything and please check out my post in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum. I'm selling some of my Intrepid stuff.

Congratulations--nice vehicle. I predict you'll miss the Intrepid's gas mileage, though.
Yeah, Intrepids are great cars. My '01 has 60K and I haven't had to spend a cent on it for anything but oil changes.

Seems like some of you keep buying your cars from Dodge. I am going down the other road. I just bought a 2005 Chevy Impala, I was debating on if I should trade in my Intrepid or sell it but I decided to keep it. The Impala has a 3.4l engine, I am guessing that this will kill my Intrepid. I believe it is alot lighter too.

Nothing wrong with the Impala, my GF has a 2003 LS with the 3.8 engine and I like it a lot. It has numerous features you pay extra for on Intrepids, but I've never actually compared the prices comparably equipped; maybe the base price of the Trep would be enough lower to allow the additional features to be added and have a similar price.
Your Intrepid looks like an SE, and that would be the 2.7 engine, so yes, the Impala will kill it, but not because of any great wt difference. The Chev 3.4 wouldn't stand a chance against a 3.5 Intrepid, and it won't have quite as much room or corner like a Trep.

If you limit yourself to one brand I feel you are shortchanging yourself.

Sometimes it's just a coincedence but it's usually brand preference.

Since Dodge is not longer the company is used to be I doubt I'll be as loyal.

My preference is usually Dodge but I've owned lots of GM's and Fords too.
The only car I will probably not chose is an import. I don't care where it's assembled, buying imports is bad for our economy because the profits end up in other countries. If the trend of today keeps going. The future in cars will be like electronics. The only cars you will be able to buy will be from Japan. Assembled here and there but the bottom line is the profits are not here.

Just be careful, the 3400 has a VERY known problem with the lower intake manifold (LIM) gasket. Check to make sure there's no coolant in your oil no less than once a month. My Grand Am has a 3100 which is basically the same engine, and I had to replace the LIM gasket at around 90k.

Yeah, I felt the same way after trading in my 2001 Intrepid SE for my Magnum. The only major thing I needed in the 5 years I had it was a new water pump. Just hope my Magnum proves to be as reliable. As far as being brand loyal, I guess I am because so far Chrysler products have been very good for me and the other domestics had nothing I wanted.
