Yea. my 'treps tranny died last friday when I was at home. from a stop light (no warning) 1-2 shift good. 2-3 shift, no good. it tries, then goes into neutral, then went to limp home mode. Talked to the Transmission mechanic. Apparently one of the planetary gear sets broke a pin or something, a freak accident. He also said this transmission only has about 25K miles on it. I didn't own the car when the tranny was replaced, so I don't get the warrenty. :(
oh well. one week and $1400 later and my car will be running again

Same thing happened to my tranny @ 126k miles on it.

What happens is that pin keeps the gear wheel from spinning constantly. It should shift in time with each gear. When the pin breaks, the wheel just free-spins once it's at-speed. That's why the car initially shifts through all gears, but as you drive, when the car downshifts at a stop, it won't shift back up because that wheel is still spinning to fast to shift. (if you understand any of that).

All you can do if you're stranded somewhere is turn the car off and let it sit for about 15 minutes (it spins A LONG time by itself in there, and you don't hear it). After that it should shift the first few times.

But it's fixed now, no biggy.

I feel for you brother! Just went through the same scenario. I hope my 'trep didn't catch some contagious disease! Sounds like it may be spreading!

well, it is a little bit different of a problem ATF.... I could always drive. If I turned the car off, started 'er up again, it would go 1-2-N, pause, then shift into 2 again. I was able to 'limp home' from aobut 15 miles away no prob..... it only does it under power too. who knows. just costs alot of money to fix. :p
