To start, I have a 97 3.5L a while back I had the tranny flushed and filled. I requested ATF+4 as I heard around this site that is what I should be using. I see from the service record that they used ATF+3 (I don't really think this is a big deal but the +4 would have been better right?)

Anyway, I checked my tranny fluid level today and it is REALLY high. Engine was barely warm and the fluid was an inch above the "full hot" line on the dipstick. I checked it again cold and it was still up there. THIS IS BAD RIGHT???? Looks like my tranny is WAY Over Full, also it appeared kinda bubbly when I checked it the first time.

Any input would be appreciated, but I'm thinking that this is bad and I should probably get the fluid down to the correct level. Also wondering about this antifoam stuff I vaguely remember hearing about, anyone have info on this?

if u have a turkey baster u can suck some fluid out of there carefully. As for using atf +3 that is fine. 4 is better but 3 is ok. The 4 is new stuff. I would just suck some out to get it to the right level.

Over full is bad, is right !!! The bubbly appearance is exactly why they say not to overfill it. Stick a siphon tube or something down the dipstick tube and lower the level asap.

With the tranny dead cold (ie sitting overnight) and before the engine is started, the level will appear to be high on the diptstick. After running for 5 minutes or so the level should be right at the bottom of the Warm region. And of course after a good run at full operating temp the level should be no higher than the top of the Hot region. Use the procedure in the manual for checking the level, on level ground.

ATF +4 is a high quality transmission oil. It is now sold in WalMart for a little over $4 a quart.

Wonder how much I gotta suck out, doesn't sound tooo hard but still no fun. Hope having the tranny way over full for the last 10,000km hasn't done any damage but what are the chances that I'm that lucky.

ATF+3 is OK in first gens!

For a first gen car like yours, ATF+3 was the factory fill.

You may switch to ATF+4 if you like. The only old mopars that shouldn't are pre 1999 minivans due to seal issues.

To remove the excess fluid, get a hand pump at autozone and some tubing at lowes and make a long pump tube and pump it into a bottle. It works and it's easy. This is one of my many nice redneck innovations I might add.
