I believe there's some type of mods involved putting a 2nd gen transmission in a 1st gen car. I think a hole has to be drilled somewhere and the wiring needs to be spliced. There was a write up a long time ago on here about ding that. Might want to do a search.

The newer A606s have much better parts then the stock 1st generation trans. For it to work, you have to make some minor modifcations. This includes, but not limited to, changing over the range sensor wiring and dremeling the new drive plate so that the 4th bolt hole matches up. They can be found on 00-04 Intrepids, concordes, LHSes, and 300Ms. Get a transmission from a 2nd gen 2.7L, and you will also get the 3.89 gears as an added bonus!

I don't think I'm going to have anyone rebuild my transmission since rebuilds are only as good as the person doing it. Besides, cheapest quote I got for a rebuild was $900 + labor to remove and re-install. A few more Benjamins and I get a reman with a 3 year, 100K warranty. I'm surely not going to take a chance on a junkyard tranny. Either they have high mileage and are worn out or they've been sitting for 15+ years.

I'd only consider this since my motor is in good shape, minus a few leaky seals. But I could rebuild that myself with help from a machine shop if I had to.
$1295 is a bargain if it's a decent rebuild. Most local shops are going to be well over $2k!



What are you waiting for? Looks to be a $400 Core deposit.

It is very very difficult to read well the dipstick when you have recently added ATF+4 fluid. And may be torque converter or pan to swallow some fluid after some usage.
In my experience, I had to add a few times more ATF+4 in my Chrysler Neon after a trans service until it definitively kept in the max level mark. I was experiencing some issues and then the issues disappeared.
A right dipstick read must be done with the car already hot (30 minutes or more of usage), with engine started, with shifter in P, and with all gears including R (reverse) used just a moment ago.

That is interesting. I know the TC sucks in some fluid as do the cooler and cooler lines which is why you need to read it while the engine is running. But mine was definitely going down some how and I don't think I'll solve that mystery.

The only issue I have now, is after driving awhile on the highway, maybe 15 minutes or so, I can kind of feel the TC loose lock-up for a split second. Especially if there is a slight incline. Feels like driving over a small ice patch. So yeah, seems like end of the road for the tranny. Fortunately, gears 1-3 seem okay. I tried driving in the '3' gear setting and didn't like it. Upon coming to a stop there is a hard downshift so I said nope to doing that.

Just going to continue to baby it until it blows its guts while I save up for a new one.
