Hi folks.

I'm new around here, This is my first post. I have a 1994 Dodge intrepid, 3.3L with close to 170,000 miles on it. Lately i've been experiencing transmission slippage and I'm wondering if anyone knows what i can do to fix it or if anyone knows roughly what it will cost for me to get it fixed? I'm new to workin on my car and my dad doesn't do transmissions.

Any suggestions you can give would be great. Thanks!

**edited to add mileage on my car is 170,000 miles enough to need a new transmission?***

Change out the fluid to MOPAR ATF +4. Should get you much better shfts.

Hmmm ok. I'll have to figure out how to drain the current transmission fluid. As i said i'm new to working on my own car. Dad said it sounded like it's low on transmission fluid - i haven't tested it yet.

Basically here is what's happening:

I was driving across the parking lot at work last night. I didn't hit any bumps beyond the speed bump which i crept over. All of a sudden even though my foot was on the gas I felt my car stop ppulling forward and i was coasting only. so I applied the brakes and slowed to a complete stop. then I slowly shifted into park and took my foot off of the break, the car was in neutral. So i slowly shifted into reverse and tried to apply gas. I didn't feel the car shift at all though. Then with my foot on the break i slowly shifted from Park all the way to Low and never once did it catch. so I shifted back to park, then shifted slowly down to drive, then from drive to neutral and back to drive and it caught. then it slipped back into neutral again when i was on the road driving home.

so do you think changing out the transmission fluid into that Mopar ATF +4 will still help?

Yes.

Dealer will do a full flush for you. Just make sure you say that you want ATF +4. Otherwise they will use +3.

i wonder how much that will cost. hopefully not too much - but if it saves my transmission I will be pleased.

I just put $750.00 in my car in repairs over the space of 4 weeks.

4 rotars, 4 sets brake pads, 1 new tie rod bushing, 1 new ball joint, 1 rear wheel bearing, 1 front wheel bearing, new battery, new thermostat, new thermostat HOUSING (mine cracked), 2 new tires, plus oil change

of course the only part I actually did on my own was the thermostat housing. But for a girl I think i did pretty well :)

thank you for the info - i'll check with the dealer and see what it should cost me.

i was told by an -ex Chrysler service manager, NEVER to do a tranny flush over 100,000 miles on our cars b/c they can't count the number of times people did them and their trannies died VERY VERY soon after. So i believe i'm steering away.

Bullshit. That is a bad rumour. I've heard it too. It will only do damage if the transmission is trashed in the first place.

One of the first things I did to my car was change the transmission fluid. It was a few months after I joined this site. I changed it again last fall as well. My transmission still shifts fine.

I had the dealer do a tranny flush, with new filter, and ATF+4 for around $140'ish. All depends which dealership that you go to and what they charge.
