As some of you may know, I recently relocated my trunk button to a more convenient placement...right near my left knee. Now, with its new home, comes a new possibility of easy thieving. My plan is to wire up a relay that will allow for the button to only operate when the car is on. So my question is this. Which wire will be getting power only when the car is running? The ACC wire (black/orange)?

If so, here is my game plan. If ACC and ACC are present, then I'll allow for the negative wire hooked to the button to be grounded. powered by a secured ground.

So...

Pin 85 - ACC
Pin 86 - ACC
Pin 87 - neg wire on trunk button
Pin 30 - Solid Ground

Does this sound like it is going to work?

sounds to me like you're suddenly making your trunk release relocation more complicated than it was worth. Of all the times ive reached into the glove compartment to open the trunk, im gonna say only about 5% of the time the car was running.
If you're worried about someone breaking into your car, then the location of the trunk button wont really make a difference. I would think that after someone takes the risk of breaking into a car they arent going to call it quits because the trunk release isnt in plain view.

Maybe I won't make it only work when the car is running. I wonder if there is a way that I could make it only work when the brake pedal is being pressed. If anyone is relay keen, please tell me how i could pull this off...if at all.

would I tap into the black/tan wire (on the brakelight switch) for 85 and 86 and then use pin 87 for the same thing (neg on trunk release harness) powered by ground? The reason I'm kind of debating this is because I don't know if the black/tan wire is a constant current.

You have an alarm right? Just disable the trunk release while the alarm is armed. You'll never need to pop the trunk with the alarm on and it shouldn't be sitting around worrying about theieves with the alarm off. Doesn't your alarm pop the trunk anyway? If so, why worry about the location of the button in the dash???

I should probably start out by saying that my alarm doesn't have the trunk release capability..its older and basic. But using the relay, how would I pull this off? I know that pin 85 would have "ground when armed." But as far as the other pins, where would they tap into? Thanks ahead of time.

That might be easier, Your remote release wont work then if you only have the trunk release with the car on or in ACC

Again, I don't have remote trunk release. I do, however, want to do the modification that doesn't allow for the trunk's release when armed. So my question is this:

How would I wire up the relay to perform this task? Like I said, I know that either pin 85 or 86 are going to have the "ground when armed" line on it...but what about the other pins?

The easiest way would simply be to break the connection from the switch to the solenoid. The only down side is that while the alarm is armed the relay coil will be energized thus drawing current. So it is potentially a battery drainer is the car sits off for too long.

Connections would be:
85/86 -> one goes to fused +12v the other goes to ground when armed (doesn't matter which is what)
30/87a -> cut the wire from the switch to the trunk or the supply to the switch and insert the relay
87 -> NC

BTW: You don't have any kind of AUX output on the alarm at all? You only have arm and disarm???

So let me get this straight. So do I need to pin both wires for the trunk switch onto the relay via pins 30 and 87a? Then I just leave pin 87 open?

So could you lay out an IF/THEN scenario for me...so that I know how this relay is working? I just want to learn.

And as far as the auxilary on my alarm goes...it doesn't exist. The remote is setup for it, but the alarm unit itself doesn't have that particular commodity

Gee, the trunk button is already at my left knee on my 2g. I guess for safety reasons, it won't work unless the transmission is in park.

You know what? I'm just going to go ahead and to what I originally planned. I'm going to make it so that the car must be on to open the trunk from the button. Its not that much more work, and frankly, it just seems more secure to me. I also don't want to drain my battery.

I don't know if it's possible but if a LeBaron trunk latch would fit on the Trep or could be adapted to it then that's the way to go. My '89 LeBaron had a switch on the inside of the trunk that disabled the remote open completely. I left it off most of the time - but it was great for the occasional mall parking lot or street parking!
